Romantic novel
The Romantic period saw the first flowering of the English novel. The Romantic and the Gothic novel are closely related; both imagined almost-supernatural forces operating in nature or directing human fate. Just as William Wordsworth and other poets were integral to the growth of English Romanticism, so Mary Shelley, and Ann Radcliffe were key to the sudden popularity of the Gothic novel. Elizabeth von Arnim (1866 -1941)
Described as "one of the three finest wits of her day", and greatly admired as a literary figure in Europe, Mary Annette Beauchamp was born in Sydney, Australia, but raised in England. The family called her "May". She met her first husband, Count Henning August von Arnim-Schlagenthin, while traveling with her father in Italy in 1889. They married in London the following year and lived in Berlin at first. After five years, the von Arnims removed to a family estate in Pomerania 90 miles north of Berlin, Nassenheide. This schloss and derelict garden is the basis for her first novel, Elizabeth and Her German Garden published anonymously in 1898. Twenty-one books followed and were signed "By the author of Elizabeth and Her German Garden" and later simply "By Elizabeth". Elizabeth gave birth to four daughters and a son, with the Count. The children's tutors at Nassenheide included such notables as E.M. Forster and Hugh Walpole. Unfortunately, in 1908 debt forced the von Arnims to sell their idyllic estate. They moved to England where Count von Arnim died in 1910. Buying a site in Switzerland, Elizabeth built the Chateau Soleil where she worked on her books and entertained friends. These included H.G.Wells (a lover) and Katherine Mansfield (a cousin). At the outbreak of the first World War she escaped to England, but one of her daughters died in Germany.

Elizabeth Von Arnim
Originally published in 1898, Elizabeth and her German Garden is the first book by Marie Annette Beauchampknown all her life as "Elizabeth". The book, anonymously published, was an incredible success, going through printing after printing by several publishers over the next few years. Elizabeth was a cousin of the better-known writer Katherine Mansfield (whose real name was Kathleen Mansfield Beauchamp). Born in Australia, Elizabeth was educated in England. She was reputed to be a fine organist and musician. At a young age, she captured the heart of a German Count, was persuaded to marry him, and went to live in Germany. Over the next years she bore five daughters. After her husband's death and the decline of the estate, she returned to England. She was a friend to many of high social standing, including people such as H. G. Wells (who considered her one of the finest wits of the day). Some time later she married the brother of Bertrand Russell; which marriage was a failure and ended in divorce. Eventually Elizabeth fled to America at the outbreak of the Second World War, and there died in 1941. Elizabeth is best known to modern readers by the name "Elizabeth von Arnim", author of
