Orlando Chivalry Index Tales of Chivalry: The Source for Handel's Orlando In 778, as the Emperor Charlemagne withdrew across the Pyrenees after an expedition into Spain against the Saracens, his rearguard, led by his nephew Roland, was ambushed and cut to pieces at the Pass of Roncesvalles, as a result of traitor Ganelon's machinations. Legends of Charlemagne and his twelve paladins or peers were soon current, though three centuries and more elapsed before they were first synthesized in writing in the French poem La Chanson de Roland, the core of which is the tragedy of Roncesvalles where the flower of French chivalry perished. The notion was already prevalent - a product to some extent of the Crusades - that Charlemagne's warriors were noble of spirit, courteous, self-effacing, generous, merciful, courageous, gallant towards women, devout followers of Christ

Italian poet, remembered primarily for his ORLANDO FURIOSO, published in its final version in 1532. Ariosto's work was the most celebrated narrative poem of the Italian high Renaissance, and the first example of modern poetry to provoke widespread critical controversy. Ariosto was born in Reggio Emilia, as the son of Count Niccolò Ariosto. At the age of then his family moved to Ferrera, where he studied law from 1489 to1494. There he also started to study Latin and Greek language and literature. When his father died in 1500, Ariosto assumed for some years the management of family estates as the eldest of 10 children. In 1502 he became commander of the fort of Canossa, and the next year he entered the service of Cardinal Ippolito d'Este. In 1513 Ariosto met Alessandra Benucci. After the death of her husband, Tito Strozzi, she became Ariosto's mistress. Because the family had settled comfortably in Ferrara, Ariosto refused to accompany Cardinal d'Este to Hungary, and entered the service of Alfonso I, Duke of Ferrara, the Cardinal's brother. In 1522 he was sent to govern the Garfagnana region in the wildest part of the Apuan Alps. He returned after three years from the bandit-ridden post to Ferrara.

LODOVICO ARIOSTO

From Cantos 10-11
Thence o'er that sea he spurred, through yielding air,
Whose briny waves the lesser Britain lave;
And, looking down, Angelica descried
In passing, to the rock with fetters tied; XCIII
Bound to the naked rock upon the strand,
In the isle of tears; for the isle of tears was hight,
That which was peopled by the inhuman band,
So passing fierce and full of foul despite; Who (as I told above) on every hand Cruized with their scattered fleet by day or night; And every beauteous woman bore away, Destined to be a monster's evil prey: XCIV There but that morning bound in cruel wise; Where (to devour a living damsel sped) The orc, that measureless sea-monster, hies, Which on abominable food is fed. How on the beach the maid became the prize Of the rapacious crew, above was said

    Milton concluded his six years of quiet study with a remarkable eighteen-month tour to various centers of European antiquity and intellectual life, notably Italy. Early in his tour, in Paris in April 1638, he was able to meet one of his great intellectual heroes, the Dutch legal theorist Hugo Grotius, exiled from Holland but then serving as the Swedish ambassador to France. Among Grotius's Latin writings were two significant for Milton's own later poetry, the drama Adamus Exsul (1601) and the poem Christus patiens (published 1619). (The library's earliest edition of Milton's third great neo-Latin poetic influence, with Buchanan and Grotius, Marco Girolamo Vida's Christiad , first published in 1535, dates only from 1731, and was not included in this exhibit.)
