Epistles to Several Persons: Epistle to Dr. Arbuthnot
(Cicero, De Re Publica VI.23)
["... you will not any longer attend to the vulgar mob's gossip nor put your trust in human rewards for your deeds; virtue, through her own charms, should lead you to true glory. Let what others say about you be their concern; whatever it is, they will say it anyway."]
Shut, shut the door, good John! fatigu'd, I said, Tie up the knocker, say I'm sick, I'm dead. The dog-star rages! nay 'tis past a doubt, All Bedlam, or Parnassus, is let out: Fire in each eye, and papers in each hand, They rave, recite, and madden round the land.
What walls can guard me, or what shades can hide? They pierce my thickets, through my grot they glide; By land, by water, they renew the charge; They stop the chariot, and they board the barge. No place is sacred, not the church is free; Ev'n Sunday shines no Sabbath-day to me: Then from the Mint walks forth the man of rhyme, Happy! to catch me just at dinner-time.

John Arbuthnot
John Arbuthnot
Physician and satirist. Born in Inverbervie (Aberdeenshire). Educated at Marischal College (Aberdeen), Oxford and St. Andrews, Arbuthnot became a successful physician, writing on the value of diet in the fight against disease and was eventually appointed Physician-in-Ordinary to Queen Anne (1704). However, it is as a political satirist that he is best remembered, developing the character John Bull as the typical Englishman which appeared in a collection entitled The History of John Bull Arbuthnot had a significant part in creating the Memoirs of Martinus Scriblerus published posthumously in 1741, which was a mocking exposure of pedantry, perhaps the pre-cursor of our own enjoyment of seeking out official jargon and bureaucracy. B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback John Gay (1685-1732) English poet and dramatist, friend of Pope and Swift. Gay is remembered for his play THE BEGGAR'S OPERA (1728), which was the basis for Kurt Weil and Bertolt Brecht 's classical work Dreigroschenoper (1928, The Threepenny Opera). The play was highly successful and enabled Gay to spent more money on gambling and drinking. Its sequel, POLLY (1729), was supposedly suppressed by the prime minister Robert Walpole, who thus only incited people to buy its printed version. Let us drink and sport to-day,
Ours is not to-morrow:
Love with youth flies swift away,
Age is naught but sorrow.
Dance and sing,
Time's on the wing,
Life never knows the return of spring.

(from The Beggar's Opera In 1708 Gay published 'Wine', a poem to celebrate the Act of Union between England and Scotland and in 1711 he published the pamphlet THE PRESENT STATE OF WIT. During these years he met Pope and began to visit the fashionable coffee-houses. In London Gay supported himself by working as a journalist. His first important poem, THE RURAL SPORTS (1713), was dedicated to Pope. The long poem comically glorifies descriptions of hunting and fishing. THE WHAT D'YE CALL IT (1715) was Gay's first satirical play, which he finished at the age of 30. The Beggar's Opera was first performed when the author was 43. John Pepusch, a German musician, wrote popular songs for the play. The story of highwaymen and corrupt law-keepers is still performed. Its sequel

At the death of the Queen, when it pleased the new government to change all the attendants of the court, the immortal suffered with the mortal. Arbuthnot, displaced from his apartments at St James’s, took a house in Dover-street remarking philosophically to Swift, that he "hoped still to be able to keep a little habitation warm in town." His circumstances were never so prosperous or agreeable after this period. With the world at large success makes merit—and the want of it the reverse—and it is perhaps impossible for human nature to think so highly of a man who has been improperly deprived of some external mark of distinction and honour, as of him who wears it without so much desert. The wit, left to his own resources and with a rising family to support, seems to have now lived in some little embarrassment.
In 1717, Arbuthnot, along with Pope, gave assistance to Gay, in a farce entitled, "Three Hours after Marriage," which, strange to say, was condemned the first night. A rival wit wrote upon this subject:-

Biographical Information Occupation, Sphere of Activity John Arbuthnot ( ), physician to Queen Anne ( ), was educated at Marischal College, Aberdeen and took his degree in Medicine at the University of St Andrews. Better known for his political satire and statistical analysis, he taught mathematics in London for a while, until he had the good fortune to be present when Prince George of Denmark ( ) fell ill. Arbuthnot's treatment cured the prince, and he was taken on in as physician extraordinary to Queen Anne. In , he became physician in ordinary to the monarch. Arbuthnot's first paper to the Royal Society was a statistical study of demographics. He also translated a work by Huygens ( ) about probability. Arbuthnot was at Queen Anne's bedside when she died, and under the new regime, Arbuthnot fell out of favour and ceased to be a courtier. Arbuthnot's paper, presented at the Royal Society in , is worth a closer look, for though it is crude, and far from conclusive; it is the first known example of statistical inference. In this paper, An Argument for Divine Providence, Taken From the Constant Regularity Observ'd in the Births of Both Sexes
