Fisher, John Arbuthnot "Jackie"
Admiral and Naval Reformer Jackie Fisher, first Baron Fisher of Kilverstone, was born in Ceylon, the son of an English planter. He joined the navy in 1854, was made captain in 1874, and reached flag rank in 1890. Fisher served as commander of the Royal Navy's gunnery school (1883-1886), director of naval ordnance (DNO) (1886-1891), superintendent of the Portsmouth Dockyard (1891-1892), third sea lord and controller (1892-1897), commander of the North America and West Indies station (1897), commander of the Mediterranean Fleet (1897-1901), second sea lord (1902-1903), commander of the Portsmouth Dockyard (1903-1904), first sea lord (1904-1910 and 1914-1915), and chairman of the Board of Invention and Research (1915-1918). While at the gunnery school and as DNO, Fisher was involved with the development of breech-loading big-guns, quick-firing guns, and naval range finders. As third sea lord and controller, he invented the destroyer and encouraged the introduction of water-tube boilers. As second sea lord, he reformed naval education. As first sea lord, Fisher changed the management of the dockyards, the manning system, gunnery training, the warship reserve, and the distribution of the fleet. These initiatives concentrated the main strength of the Royal Navy in home waters, increased the navy's ability to mobilize its full strength rapidly and fight more effectively in case of a short war, and produced large reductions in naval spending.

From "National Genealogical Society Quarterly," June 1975, Vol.63, No.2, an article entitled "Scottish Rebels Transported to Maryland, 1747" lists John Arbuthnot as transported in the ship Johnson of Liverpool, 1747. These "rebels" were "taken prisoner after the 1745 Scottish uprising...to the plantations at the rate of 5 pounds per head." The Johnson, captained by William Pemberton, left Liverpool 5 May 1747, arriving at Port Oxford, Maryland on 17 July 1747. It has not been proven that this John is the immigrant ancestor of this line.

ARBUTHNOT, daughter of ANDREW ARBUTHNOT and MARY DALGARNO. She was born Abt. 1698, and died in Virginia.
Notes for THOMAS ARBUTHNOT:
There has been considerable research done by Jo Ann Arbuthnot Mardis in order to determine which person was the immigrant ancestor for Table 58. Many of the sought-after records burned in house and courthouse fires. At the present time, the material offered here is the most plausible explanation. Thomas was descended from Alexander Arbuthnot, Sr., 1st in Rora, of Scotland, Table P.
Although it is theorized by some that John Arbuthnot and Dorothea Jones Donald Arbuthnot (born 2 Feb 1727 and died about 1780) are the ancestors of this line, it does not seem likely, given the statement in the Jones Genealogy that Dorothea had no children by either her first husband, George Donald, a Glasgow merchant, or her second, "Mr. Arbuthnot." An article, "History of Kentucky," edition 8-13, lists Dorothea's second husband as "Mr. Arbuthnot, D.D. born about 1780."

THE ARBUTHNOTT FAMILY ASSOCIATION Concerning Dr John Arbuthnot, Physician to Queen Anne Dr John Arbuthnot (1667-1735) was the political satirist who created the character of John Bull and was immortalised by his friendship with Pope, Swift and Gay. For details of his genealogy click here . For details of his career click here. There are portraits described as being of Dr John Arbuthnot which seems more probably to be of William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield (1705-93). In setting out the facts on this site, it may be better to present the portraits in order (1 - 9) Dr John Arbuthnot, (10) the portrait in question and (11 - 16) the Earl of Mansfield. Uncontroversial representations of Dr John Arbuthnot include: 1. William Robinson's portrait which is in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. This is reproduced in Beattie's " John Arbuthnot ". This William Robinson is not the Robinson (1799-1839) who was a pupil of Sir Thomas Lawrence. 2.
