Scottish physician and writer noted for his satirical anti-Whig pamphlets published as Law Is a Bottomless Pit (1712) and later retitled The History of John Bull. Encyclopedia Arbuthnot, John ¤rbÅ­th nət, ¤r bəthnŏt ) , 1667–1735, Scottish author and scientist, court physician (1705–14) to Queen Anne. He is best remembered for his five “John Bull” pamphlets (1712), political satires on the Whig war policy, which introduced the character John Bull, the typical Englishman. With his friends, Swift, Pope, and Gay, Arbuthnot was a member of the Scriblerus Club , organized to ridicule false tastes in learning, and was the principal author of the “Memoirs of...Martinus Scriblerus,” first published in the quarto edition of Pope's works (1741). He was also the author of several progressive medical works. Greatly admired in his time, Arbuthnot was called an unusual genius by Samuel Johnson, and Pope addressed to him the famous “Epistle to Dr. Arbuthnot.” Bibliography See edition of his works by G. A. Arbuthnot was born in Kincardineshire Scotland , son of Rev Alexander Arbuthnot, an Episcopalian minister and Margaret, n©e Lammie. He graduated with an arts from Marischal College in . After the death of his father, Arbuthnot went to London , where he supported himself by teaching Mathematics In , he translated Christian Huygens ' treatise on probability , adding material of his own. This was the first work on probability published in English. Also in , he entered University College, Oxford , and in he received an M.D. at St. Andrews University in Scotland. Around , Arbuthnot published his Essay on the usefulness of mathematical learning . He became a fellow of the Royal Society in Being by a fortunate accident at Epsom, he was called in to provide medical care for
