If you were a child growing up in the United States during the 20th Century, chances are you may have read books from the Stratemeyer Syndicate. Edward Stratemeyer put together a team of writers who, especially in the first half of the century, produced a large number of series for children, primarily boys. The Bobbsey Twins, Nancy Drew (their most successful offerings for small children and girls, respectively), the Hardy Boys, Don Sturdy, and the X-Bar-X Boys are just a sampling of the Syndicate's output. The most popular series (and most collectible today) are the Tom Swift books, which cover 95 books and four different Toms. Tom Swift wasn't merely an inventor; he was a genius. The ultimate lesson of the books is simple; hard work and clean living makes for success. Whatever the problem, however formidable the opposition, Tom could always triumph with time and effort. Not exactly an original formula; but it has been a long-term winner for the Stratemeyer Syndicate. Let's look at the series.

Tom Swift and His Hyperdimensional Babe Magnet
Once again, the redoubtable James Lileks has unearthed a treasure trove of off-kilter retroimagery. This time, it's a collection of scanned covers from the Tom Swift Jr. book series. I owned every single one of these hilariously formulaic tomes as a child, but when I became a teenager, I decided that no girl was ever going to want to date a geek who possessed such an adolescent collection of sci-fi wankery, and threw them all away. It took me a couple more years to realize that not wearing blue pinstriped overalls every day was the second step on my road to obtaining steady female companionship.
UPDATE: Inspired by Uncle Jazzbeau's comment on this post, I went a' googling and found these nice (and ginormous) scans of dustjackets from the original Tom Swift Sr. books that were written in the 1930s. TrackBack

are a relatively recent development of the Wellerism , so we shall first look at what a Wellerism is. Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable defines it thus: Sam Weller in Charles Dickens' "Pickwick Papers" (1836-7) was prone to producing punning sentences such as: ' Out with it, as the father said to the child when he swallowed a farden [farthing] '. This type of verbal play, involving a metaphorical and a punningly literal sense, soon gained popularity under the name of wellerism , and a craze for devising such expressions rapidly sprang up on both sides of the Atlantic. A crude example familiar to children is: ' I see, said the blind man, when he couldn't see at all. A Tom Swifty is a Wellerism in which an adverb relates both properly and punningly to a sentence of reported speech. This is no doubt easier to see from some examples (if you don't understand the pun in any of the examples on this page, you will find explanations at the bottom of the page
  • "The doctor had to remove my left ventricle," said Tom half-heartedly.

, there are Madeleine L'Engle Ursula K. Le Guin , and Anne McCaffrey (besides lesser-known authors whom I still appreciate, such as Janet Kagan Elizabeth Moon , and Kathy Tyers .) In fact, there are so many female authors that I have come to appreciate that it might almost look as if I'm running some kind of female science fiction authors fan club. Well, that impression is going to get stronger, because I have more authors to share with you. Specifically, C.J. Cherryh. Recently, I was reminded that I hadn't put up reviews of any of her works, even though I deeply appreciate her work. Now, a new ingredient suddenly thrusts itself into this bubbling stew, an Outsider. A member of yet another spacefaring species from outside the territory of the seven species in the Compact. Suddenly, the game gets much more dangerous, as traders are willing to kill to gain an advantage in opening up a new market of unknown size. Pyanfar Chanur is brought face-to-face with the situation when the Outsider stows away on her ship. She has enough problems of her own, and would like nothing more than to be rid of the interference, except that the alien who insists that she hand the Outsider over to him is a kif, a member of the most odious species in the compact.
