43. Tom Swifties
the pseudonym Victor Appleton, began in 1910 and continued until 1935. 1954 started the Tom Swift, Jr series under the pseudonym Victor Appleton II.
http://users.tinyonline.co.uk/gswithenbank/tomswift.htm
Tom Swifties Tom Swift was the creation of the American author Edward L. Stratemeyer (1862-1930). Stratemeyer, who was also the creator of the Bobbsey Twins, Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys, first used the name Tom Swift for the title character in Shorthand Tom; or, the exploits of a young reporter , serialised in 1894. 16 years later he re-used the name for a new character, an ingenious youth whose amazing scientific inventions and discoveries carried him to many weird and wonderful places. The Tom Swift adventure series, which was published under the pseudonym Victor Appleton, began in 1910 and continued until 1935. Stratemeyer only supplied the characters and the (repetitive) plots for his books; he had a syndicate of some 20 hack writers to do the actual writing, and the actual chief writer of the Tom Swift books was Howard Roger Garis (1873-1962). After Stratemeyer's death, the syndicate was taken over by his daughter, Harriet S. Adams, who in 1954 started the Tom Swift, Jr series under the pseudonym Victor Appleton II.

The Stratemeyer Syndicate was created by Edward Stratemeyer as a way to produce the hundreds of story ideas he had without having to write them all himself. He would create outlines of stories and have ghost writers turn the outlines into books. The Tom Swift books, owned by The Syndicate, were ghost written in this fashion. An outline was supplied by The Syndicate and a ghost writer would use it to churn out the next exciting adventure of Tom Swift. Victor Appleton and Victor Appleton II did not actua lly exist.

Academics would say that I had a mixture of Classical, Neoclassical, Romantic and other literature. In the early years of the 20th Century, juvenile-book entrepreneur Edward Stratemeyer conceived a series of books aimed at young boys chronicling the adventures of a brilliant teenage inventor by the name of Tom Swift. Written by several authors (mainly Howard R. Garis of "Uncle Wiggly" fame) and issued under the series pseudonym "Victor Appleton," the forty volumes (1910-1941) were remarkably popular, and may be said to have influenced a generation of budding geniuses. In 1954 the heirs of Stratemeyer resumed the series: but now it was The New Tom Swift Jr. Adventures, its hero the even more brilliant son of the original Tom Swift (who still made appearances as the eminence gris of the Swifts' modern high-tech invention facility, of which he was the CEO), and the pseudonymous author was now "Victor Appleton II" (for the most part a gifted storyteller named James Duncan Lawrence). Straddling the fondly-remembered era of nuclear subs, supersonic jets, color TVs, big-finned cars, and sputniks, Tom Jr. and his supporting cast lived on for thirty-four volumes of their own, enduring the Summer of Love and the "Tom Swifties" joke craze, finally succumbing to the world's mounting cynicism in 1971. But Tom Swift Jr. lives on—in our hearts, in our childhood affections, in the science classes he helped us pass once upon a time. And now he lives on here, in a series of full-length tales that are tribute, parody, and modern resurrection. The titles and tales may look familiar, but be warned: this is an alternate-reality Tom Swift, great-grandson of the first one, living

    Introduction
In the first place, there never was a "Laura Lee Hope." The Bobbsey Twins were created in 1904 by Edward Stratemeyer. One of dozens of juvenile series that Stratemeyer created and managed, the Bobbseys, along with Nancy Drew The Hardy Boys , and Tom Swift are among the best known of childrens' book characters. Using the pseudonym "Laura Lee Hope," Legend says that Stratemeyer wrote the first three books himself, then hired ghost writers to write the remaining books, often from outlines he prepared. Newer information tells us that he probably only wrote the first book. Careful reading of the first three will suggest that, as the style in the first book is quite different from the others. (For more details on who really wrote each of the 72 books, see James Keeline's article on the subject .) On Stratemeyer's death in 1930, his daughter Harriet Stratemeyer Adams took over the Stratemeyer Syndicate. The first series of books written/produced by Stratemeyer was The Rover Boys , written under the pseudonym of Arthur M. Winfield. There were 30 volumes, written between 1899 and 1926.
