Daddy Takes Us to the Garden
Subtitle The Daddy Series for Little Folks Author Victor Appleton (pseudonym) Category Children's Language English Excerpt For a moment they looked very much disappointed. "Oh, Daddy Blake!" cried Hal. "This isn't a new game at all! We've got a bean-bag one!" "And we got tired of playing it to-day," went on Mab, in disappointed tones. "This isn't exactly a bean-bag game," said Mr. Blake with a smile, "though you can make it one if you like. It's ever so much more fun than just bean-bags, for there are many other different parts to the garden game. Now if you'll sit down I'll tell you about it." Hal and Mab saw some brightly colored pictures, among other things, in the big bag that had held the beans, and they thought perhaps they might have fun with the garden game after all. Some of you have met Hal and Mab Blake before, on one or more of their many trips with Daddy, so I do not need to tell all of you about the children. But to those of you who read this book as the beginning of the Daddy Series I may say that the first volume is called "Daddy Takes Us Camping." In that I told you how Daddy and the two childr

Well, to tell the truth, there was no author named Victor Appleton. The name was a pseudonym for a number of ghost writers employed by the Stratemeyer Syndicate , a publisher of fiction for boys and girls. The Stratemeyer Syndicate published several series of novels, each series based upon a central continuing character (or set of characters). The series that were published by the Stratemeyer Syndicate included The Bobbsey Twins The Motor Boys Jack Ranger Tom Swift Nancy Drew The Hardy Boys and others. Victor Appleton was the name chosen by the Stratemeyer Syndicate for the author of the Tom Swift series. The core of the Stratemeyer Syndicate was Edward Stratemeyer (the founder) and his two daughters, Harriet and Edna. The way that the Syndicate worked was that someone (usually Harriet or Edna) would write an outline for a book, and then a ghost writer would be commissioned to write the book. There were at least a half dozen ghost writers that worked regularly for the firm, most of whom specialized in one or more of the different series. In the case of the Tom Swift series, the usual ghost writer was

A Tom Swift book from the fourth series. Tom Swift is the protagonist in a series of children's adventure novels from the early twentieth century. The stories featured technology (especially transport technology) as the real star. Tom Swift is a young inventor living in the town of Shopton in New York State. His father is the frail inventor Barton Swift who is too infirm to take part in many adventures. Where is Tom Swift,
Now that We Need Him?
Essay by
Ron Grube September 2001
I was totally amazed when a group of parents and teenagers came to a city council meeting in my small Nevada town, complaining that the city government was not providing enough facilities to keep "the kids" occupied. In the ensuing discussion, it appeared that most of these people thought it was local government, rather than the parents and teens themselves, that was responsible for the boredom and general aimlessness of our younger citizens. The city has two excellent city parks, with night-lit ball fields, tennis and basketball courts, horseshoe pits, and a fishing pond with surrounding nature trails for daytime use. There is a very sparsely used branch of the county public library. Seems that this is insufficient, and the city should provide such things as video arcades and teen dance halls, items I always assumed were best left to private enterprise. Questions were asked about hobbies, reading, Scouting (somewhat alive, mostly in the youngest groups), and community activities. It seems that anything requiring more than a minimal amount of thought or effort, especially activities that would actually lead to learning useful skills, has been relegated to the level of political incorrectness. Speaking with the parents led to the conclusion that they, too, had no real interests or activities other than work, TV, and maybe the local saloon. Few of them read the local newspaper, much less books. Hobbies such as ham radio, model aircraft, even working on cars or playing board games that required thinking were unheard of. Parents amuse themselves playing video slot machines, youth play video games and drive around town playing rap music at volume levels that bulge car windows and has to be mind-numbing to all in the vehicle.

One of the great things about having a pocket computer is its ability to store electronic books which you can read anywhere, any time. I've been using PalmOS portable digital assistants (PDAs) since 1999, and have written several utilities for this platform. With the advent of the combined PalmOS PDA and GSM mobile telephone (I've used the Handspring Treo 180g and 270), a single gizmo is all I need to pack, and it's always by my side. The limited resolution and small size of a PDA screen isn't as felicitous a medium for literature as ink on paper or even a high resolution computer screen, but it has the advantage that it's always at hand . With a book or two on the PDA, whenever I'm stuck in a long line at the post office or supermarket, sitting in the dentist's waiting room, or waiting for the train, I can pass the time in one of my favourite ways reading even if I didn't pack a book. As this kind of "PDA reading" tends to be catch as catch can, subject to interruption at any time, it's best to choose light titles which don't require a lot of concentration or a long attention span to appreciate. Early 20th century juvenile pulp fiction fills this bill superbly, and recently I've been reading the original Tom Swift novels written by Victor Appleton between 1910 and 1941. (Note that there were two subsequent series of books written by "Victor Appleton II" [a "house name" pseudonym for various writers] featuring both the Tom Swift and Tom Swift, Jr. characters. I refer here to the original series.)

"Allen Chapman" was a pseudonym of the Stratemeyer Syndicate, a "book packager," to use a modern phrase, which was responsible for many popular juvenile series books published between 1905 and 1986, including the Bobbsey Twins, Tom Swift, Hardy Boys, and Nancy Drew books, among thers. The Syndicate produced some 1,600 volumes which were written from outlines by hired "ghostwriters" for a flat fee (ie no royalties). Over the 75+ years of their operation, the Syndicate hired about 100 different ghostwriters for their series. Some writers completed only a short story or a partial manuscript while some others wrote more than 100 volumes. In one case, Howard R. Garis, wrote more than 315 books for the Syndicate. The "Allen Chapman" name was used on several Syndicate series and many writers worked on books published under that name. One story may have been written by the founder of the Syndicate, Edward Stratemeyer (1862- 1930), but the others were by hired writers. For example, the Chapman name was used on the Ralph of the Railroad series and five different writers were involved in the ten volumes in the series. The first five were written by Weldon James Cobb (1849-1922), the Syndicate's first ghostwriter, followed by two books by Walter Bertram Foster (1869-1929), one book by John William Duffield (1859-1946), one by Roger Carroll Garis (1901-1967), and one by John Franklin Carter (1881-?).
