Fadern var skomakare, fattig men med lust f¶r b¶cker. Han f¶rlorade sin h¤lsa som soldat i Tyskland och dog snart efter hemkomsten till Odense. Fadersl¶s och utan lekkamrater, ¤gnade sig Christian ¥t fantasier som han spelade upp p¥ sin dockteater. Modern ville att han skulle bli skr¤ddare, men Christian ville till teatern. Direkt efter konfirmationen begav han sig till K¶penhamn, d¤r han misslyckades i s¥ng, sk¥despeleri?, balett och dramaf¶rfatteri, men goda v¤nner skaffade honom ett stipendium (mot l¶fte att han inte skulle spilla sin tid p¥ versmakeri!) s¥ att han 17,5 ¥r gammal kunde b¶rja i skola (i Slagelse och Helsing¸r) och 1828 tog studenten. Han var mobbad b¥de av de yngre klasskamraterna och av rektorn. Efter examen b¶rjade han skriva och ge ut b¶cker som gick hem hos publiken men fick d¥lig kritik i recensionerna. 1833 fick han ett stipendium f¶r en resa i Europa som verkade utvecklande p¥ honom och uppe i 30-¥rs¥ldern b¶rjade hans framg¥ngar komma t¤tare. 1835 utkom "Eventyr fortalte for B¸rn" och 1845 "Nye Eventyr" som bland annat inneh¶ll "Den grimme †lling" (den fula ankungen). Det r¥der ingen tvekan om att denna saga handlar om f¶rfattaren sj¤lv. H.C. Andersen dog 1875. Hans sagor har ¶versatts till mer ¤n 100 spr¥k.

Hans Christian Andersen werd op 2 april 1805 in de Deense stad Odense op het eiland Funen geboren. Van figurant tot wereldberoemd schrijver Hans Christian Andersen bezocht in 1812 voor het eerst het theater in Odense. Daarna wist hij het zeker: hier lag zijn toekomst. Maar dan niet in Odense. Andersen vertrok in 1819 naar Kopenhagen. Korte tijd was hij zanger, acteur en danser, maar het werd algauw duidelijk dat hier onvoldoende talent voor had. Invloedrijke mensen bespeurden wel een ander talent en zetten zich in voor de jonge kunstenaar. Hans Christian Andersen Father of the Modern Fairy Tale by Terri Windling I t's commonly supposed that all fairy tales are stories from the folk tradition, passed through the generations by storytellers since the dawn of time. While it's true that most fairy tales are rooted in oral folklore, to a greater or lesser degree, many of the best-known stories actually come to us from literary sources. In previous columns, we've looked (briefly) at the literary fairy tales of sixteenth century Italy , written by Straparola and Basile, and (in more depth) at the influential salon fairy tales of seventeenth and eighteenth century France The Little Mermaid, The Wild Swans, The Princess and the Pea, The Emperor's New Clothes, The Nightingale, The Tinder Box, The Ugly Duckling, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, The Red Shoes, The Fir Tree, The Snow Queen (his masterpiece), and many others. Hans Christian Andersen's own life had some of the aspects of a fairy tale: he was born the son of a poor cobbler and he died a rich and famous man, celebrated around the world, the intimate of kings and queens. Although today Andersen is primarily known as a writer of stories for children, during his lifetime he was also celebrated for his other literary works, including six novels, five travel journals, three autobiographies, and numerous poems and plays. The modern image of Andersen (as portrayed in the sugary 1952 film Hans Christian Andersen Peter Pan in the original. Both Andersen and Barrie wrote children's stories into which they carefully, skillfully embedded comedy, social critique, satire, and philosophy aimed at adult readers. Andersen pioneered this style, and writers like Barrie are indebted to him, as are numerous children's writers today — including Jane Yolen, Roald Dahl, Diana Wynne Jones, Philip Pullman, and J. K. Rowling — whose works are beloved by adult readers,. "I seize on an idea for grown-ups," Andersen explained, "and then tell the story to the little ones while always remembering that Father and Mother often listen, and you must also give them something for their minds." Born in Odense, he suffered from poverty and neglect during his childhood, and when he was 14 years of age he ran away to Copenhagen. There he worked for Jonas Collin, director of the Royal Theater, until Collin raised money to provide him with an education. Andersen had poetry and prose published and plays produced beginning in 1822. His first success was "A Walk from Holmen's Canal to the East Point of the Island of Amager in the Years 1828 and 1829" (1829), a fantastic tale imitative of the style of German writer E.T.A. Hoffmann. Andersen's first novel, The Improviser (1835; translated 1845), was well received by critics, and his first book of fairy tales was published the same year. La petite Poucette Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) est un écrivain danois, qui, grâce à ses Contes pour enfants, incarne le génie populaire nordique. Il est né à Odense le 2 avril 1805, au sein d'une famille pauvre. Son père est cordonnier et meurt lorsqu'il a onze ans. Il part seul à quatorze ans chercher fortune à Copenhague. Il est tenté par le chant, le théâtre puis la danse et travaille quelque temps pour le directeur du Théâtre Royal, qui financera plus tard ses études. Dès 1822, Andersen commence à publier ses premiers textes: un récit fantastique inspiré par E.T.A.Hoffmann, Pro menade du canal de Holmen à la pointe orientale d'Amagre (1830). Il obtient son premier succès l'année suivante avec Reflets d'un voyage dans le Harz , récit d'un voyage en Europe. Par la suite, il écrit d'autres romans souvent autobiographiques et d'inspiration romantique co mme l'Improvisateur Rien qu'un violoneux (1837) ou Être ou ne pas être (1857), mais aussi des poèmes, des pièces de théâtre
