For nearly three hundred fifty years, some of the world's most illustrious navigators, including John Cabot, Jacques Cartier and Henry Hudson, searched unsuccessfully for a northern waterway by which ships could bypass the Americas from the Atlantic Ocean en route to the Pacific and Asia. It was the loss of one such expedition in 1845, under the command of Sir John Franklin, and the ensuing attempts to find the Franklin party, that "finally solved the riddle of the Northwest Passage: three different expeditions independently discovered three separate passages between the years 1848 and 1851" (Delpar

The Roald Amundsen Monument - Or The Ship That Isn't There
by Hamilton Barrett This site is located along the Great Highway at San Francisco's Ocean Beach, in the parking lot of the Beach Chalet Restaurant on the western edge of Golden Gate Park. The only monument here is a 12-foot "bauta," or stone shaft, made of Norwegian granite, and it features a relief of Roald Amundsen (1872-1928). The shaft has been here since 1930, and it marks where Amundsen's ship, the Gjoa (pronounced "Joe") was in dry-dock. It had been pulled ashore here in 1909, and placed on dry-dock display, after being given to the people of San Francisco from its Norwegian community. The ship's story is very much like the belief that unless you show someone you love them, they might go away. As a teenager I remember Amundsen's ship, and how the locals usually zipped by without stopping to read the plaque. In 1972 the ship was returned to Norway. The secret: Roald Amundsen was one of the world's most important explorers. Between 1903 and 1906 his crew were the first to navigate successfully the Northwest passage, from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Along the way Amundsen's expedition had determined the position of the Magnetic North Pole. And the epic adventure was completed when this 69-foot sailing ship entered San Francisco in 1906. Its arrival was greeted with great celebration and acclaim.

* Greenland
Eiríkr raudi (Eirik the Red) emigrated from Jæren in Norway to Iceland in 981 or 982 in search of a new land. The reason for his departure was apparently some unexplained local murders. From Iceland, Eirik made lots of travels, and on one of them found Greenland, which was soon colonized. But it was his son, Leif, who was going to make the biggest discovery... (see below)
* America
The Icelandic born Leif Eirikson, son of Eirik the Red (see above), followed in his father's footsteps and discovered more new land: He found a land he called Helluland (Flatstone Land, probably Baffin Island), then he sailed to Markland (Forest Land, Labrador), and from there to Vinland . The account of his voyage is preserved in Gronlendinga saga. Eiriks saga rauda has a different version: according to this, Leif put out to sea from Norway, in order to sail home to Greenland; he was driven off course, and came to an unknown land where he found self-sown wheat and vine trees. A new expedition, led by Toifinnr Karlsefni, set out for this new land, and in connection with his expedition, the saga calls the land Vinland. Traditions, it will be seen, differ, but they agree that a new land far west in the Atlantic had been discovered. The year is about A.D. 1000.

AMUNDSEN, ROALD

Roald Amundsen (1872-1928) was a Norwegian polar explorer who was the first person to fly over the North Pole in a dirigible (May 11-13, 1926) and was the first person to reach the South Pole. Amundsen and his small expedition reached the South Pole on December 14, 1911, traveling by dog sled. Amundsen was also the first person to sail around the world through the Northeast and Northwest passages, from the Atlantic to the Pacific (in 1905). He was the first person to reach both the North and South Poles. Amundsen died in a plane crash attempting to rescue his friend, the Italian explorer Umberto Nobile who was lost in an airship. For more information on Amundsen, click here BOYD, LOUISE A.
Louise Arner Boyd (1887-1972), known as the "ice woman," was an American who repeatedly explored and photographed the Arctic Ocean; she was also the first woman to fly over the North Pole. Born in San Rafael, California, (near San Francisco), Boyd inherited the family fortune (made by her father's investment company) when she was 33 years old (in 1920).
