Roald Amundsen
Amundsen's preparations led him into serious debt. His little boat, the , was in danger of being impounded when, one June afternoon in 1903, the expedition sailed out of Oslo. Here, Amundsen became fascinated by the way the Inuit exploited their environment to survive. They wore warm caribou (reindeer) skins, built well-insulated houses of snow blocks and travelled on sleds, pulled by dogs. (Amundsen would use this knowledge when, in 1911, he became the first to reach the South Pole.) Despite the growing discontentment of his crew (exacerbated by Amundsen forbidding affairs with Inuit women), the remained off King William Island until August 1905 while its captain learned as much as he could from the Inuit. Then the expedition set sail again, along a shallow, uncharted channel, risking rocks as well as ice. At last, on 17 August, they sighted a whaling ship from San Francisco. They had completed the Northwest Passage.

Roald Amundsen: Navigates Northwest Passage Roald Amundsen (1872-1928) of Norway was the first person to successfully navigate the fabled Northwest Passage His journey took three years to complete - he and his crew had to wait while the frozen sea around them thawed enough to allow for navigation. His little 47 ton fishing boat, Gjøa (pronounced "y-eu-a") was finally able to leave his Arctic base at Gjøahaven (today - Gjoa Haven , Nunavut), and on August 26, 1905 he and his 6-man crew encountered a ship bearing down on them from the west. They were through the Northwest Passage! Amundsen was fascinated with polar exploration (as a youth, he slept with the windows open during frigid Norwegian winters to condition himself) and he took pride in being referred to as "the last of the Vikings". He was also the first person to reach the South Pole (1911), and one of the first (with Umberto Nobile and Lincoln Ellsworth) to fly over the North Pole in a dirigible (1926).

Roald Amundsen (1872-1928), Fram , led the first successful expedition to reach the South Pole, arriving Dec. 14, 1911, just ahead of Britain's ill-fated Robert Scott.
Later, Amundsen was cheated from another North Pole first, when American Admiral Richard Byrd claimed to have flown a plane over the North Pole with Floyd Bennett. Subsequent first-person historical evidence now suggests that Byrd never quite made it, and that Amundsen, who crossed the pole in a rigid airship a short time later in 1926 actually was first.
Amundsen disappeared while flying a rescue mission to save a fellow explorer in the Arctic in 1928.

Roald (ROH ahl) Amundsen (AH muhn suhn or AH muhnd suhn) (1872-1928), a Norwegian explorer, led the first expedition to reach the South Pole. Amundsen and four companions discovered the pole on Dec. 14, 1911. They beat a British expedition led by Robert F. Scott by five weeks. Amundsen is also noted for his many Arctic explorations.
Amundsen had originally planned on discovering the North Pole. He organized an Arctic expedition and was about to leave when he heard that Commander Robert E. Peary, an American explorer, had just reached the pole. Amundsen changed his plans and decided to lead an expedition to the South Pole instead. Library of Congress Race to the South Pole
Amundsen left Norway secretly in June 1910 aboard the ship Fram. At about the same time, Scott, unaware of Amundsen's expedition, also was on his way to the Antarctic. While stopping in Melbourne, Australia, in October 1910, Scott received a message from Amundsen informing him that Amundsen was proceeding to Antarctica. The race to the South Pole was on.

History Amundsen Park is among the thirteen parks created by the Northwest Park District, one of 22 park commissions consolidated into the Chicago Park District in 1934. The Northwest Park District began to purchase land for the park in 1925, on the recommendation of its Committee on Park Sites. By 1928, the North Austin Community Club was urging speedy improvement of the property. Before the end of that year, the park district had acquired the remainder of the park's 13.33 acres, contracted for playground equipment, and approved fieldhouse plans. By 1931, some improvements had been made, but a plea by the North Austin Manor Neighborhood Club to move ahead with the fieldhouse could not be honored due to the district's financial condition. The Chicago Park District eventually constructed the Amundsen Park fieldhouse in 1954. The Northwest Park District designated the park Roald Amundsen Park in 1933, two years after rejecting a petition to name the park for Norwegian-born football coach Knute Rockne (1888-1931). The Norwegian National League suggested the Amundsen name as a way to honor Norwegian polar adventurer Roald Amundsen (1872-1928). Amundsen led many scientific explorations in the Arctic and Antarctic, but is best known for discovering the South Pole on December 4, 1911. In 1928, Amundsen's plane disappeared near the North Pole as he led a search for a missing Italian dirigible.

Roald Amundsen 1872-1928
explorer, born at Borge, Norway, near Oslo; died in a plane crash on about June 18, 1928 in the Arctic Ocean. Amundsen was the first to make a ship voyage through Canada's Northwest Passage (on the Gjoa, 1903-05), the first to reach the South Pole (Dec. 14, 1911), and likely the first to cross the North Pole by air, since a recent rereading of Richard Byrd's diary suggests the US aviator had to turn back. Roald Amundsen

To avoid the obstacle of the ice pack, a Swedish engineer named Salomon Andrée attempted to use an unpowered helium-filled silk balloon to reach the Pole from Spitsbergen in 1896 and 1897. Unfavorable winds cancelled the attempt in 1896, but the following year Andrée, along with Nils Strindberg and Knut Frankel, managed to take off. Three days later, fog and icing caused the balloon to founder about 350 miles from Danes Island. The three men managed to reach White Island, but it was not until over thirty years later that their remains were discovered.
An Italian nobleman, Luigi Amedeo di Savoia, Duke of the Abruzzi, led another attempt from the northeasternmost extremity of Franz Josef Land, Rudolf Island in 1899. Luigi's fingers were so badly frostbitten during winter that he was unable to make a run at the Pole the following spring. Instead, Umberto Cagni took a sledge party 20 miles further north than Nansen's record, but three men perished on the return.

Having conquered the Northwest Passage and the South Pole, Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen set his sights on the North Pole. He chose to adopt Fridtjof Nansen's idea of freezing a ship into the ice and floating to the Pole. However, the Fram was no longer seaworthy, so a new wooden vessel, the Maud , was constructed with an egg-shaped bottom to lift under ice pressure and avoid being crushed, similar to the Fram. Despite the start of World War I, the Maud departed Christiania (Oslo), Norway in July 1918, and set off through the Northeast Passage, along the coast of Siberia, with the intention of being frozen into the pack ice north of the Bering Strait. However, the pack ice formed much earlier that year, and by September the
