Tract Society Offers Evangelistic Halloween Alternative

By Jim Brown
October 23, 2002 (AgapePress) - The American Tract Society is encouraging Christian families to spread the "good news" on a "bad news night." Every year, the American Tract Society distributes millions of gospel tracts. But for the first time, the ATS is attempting to reach three million children with "Halloween Rescue Kits." The kit includes tracts, individually wrapped pieces of candy, stickers, and 31 sealable treat bags. ATS marketing director Mark Brown says there are many creative ways families and individuals can use the kits. "The idea [is] that you assemble everything together like in a family setting or, even if you're single, you can have them ready to go by your door," Brown says. "I know some people who will actually take them to school or take them to work, or they'll take them with them when they go out trick-or-treating and actually hand them to the people who are handing out the candy, and saying 'Thank you, I'd like you to have this.' There are all kinds of ways to use the Halloween Rescue Kit packages." According to Brown, every year his organization is informed of individuals who have accepted Christ as their Savior after reading gospel tracts they received on Halloween night.

July 6, 2005 Last week, the Supreme Court issued a mixed decision concerning the display of the Ten Commandments on public property. Because of decisions like this in our society, more and more people are prohibited from viewing basic, vital biblical truths. In response, one of America's oldest Christian ministries, the American Tract Society, takes aim with new pocket-sized Ten Commandments cards. These easy-to-read reminders of the Ten Commandments are the first in a series of Core Value Cards that ATS is releasing in August. A recent survey by The Barna Group indicates a large percentage of Christians struggle in the area of Bible knowledge. These cards are a response to an alarming trend in our country: more and more Americans lack knowledge of basic biblical precepts. It is this lack of biblical knowledge that has caused many to fall away from the faith or misunderstand traditional "core" values. ATS is uniquely able to create relevant messages of hope and deliver Billy-Graham type gospel presentations to millions of people each year. Movies like the next “Harry Potter,” coming in November, and “Bewitched,” released this month, provide perfect opportunities for sharing the gospel through tracts such as "Is Witchcraft the Way?" In addition, ATS is offering a series of tracts for the “Chronicles of Narnia,” which hits the screens in December. The first tracts are available now.

Nineteenth Century Children's Chapbook Collection
Introduction
Many similar and related materials (both cataloged and uncataloged) are collocated in Special Collections and University Archives. Pre-twentieth century children's books of various sizes have been catalogued into the RUL Catalog (IRIS), at the item level, and may be accessed using a standard catalog search. Of these materials, rare and early children's books published in New Jersey are housed in the ' Sinclair NJ' and ' Sinclair NJ-X' collections, and rare and early children's books published elsewhere are housed in the Library's rare, or 'X,' collection. An uncataloged collection of eighteenth and nineteenth century chapbooks, chiefly British, amassed by the eminent twentieth century bibliographer and entomologist, Harry B. Weiss, are also housed in Special Collections and University Archives. The Finding Aid for the Nineteenth Century Children's Chapbook Collection mounted on the Special Collections and University Archives Web, and the collection level record mounted in IRIS, represent only a significant part of the chapbooks in the Children's Chapbook Collection. Silvana Notarmaso, a graduate student in the Rutgers School of Communication, Information and Library Studies, organized the Finding Aid under the supervision of the Rare Book and Jerseyana Catalog Librarian. The time constraints of a school semester meant only a portion of the materialswhich we estimate at one-third of the collectioncould be identified and described. The Finding Aid will serve as a prototype for accessing the remainder of the Collection over the course of the next several years (1999-2001).

Native American Tract
In a time when our world and cultures may be at a crossroads, we are drawn together as one in addiction.
In the past 25 years, 20 - 25% of our patients have been Native American. Our philosophy is based on our belief that each individual is unique and of worth, and should be treated with dignity and respect. Keystone recognizes the uniqueness of the Native American and is sensitive to their culture in our treatment process. We have the skilled staff, commitment, and understanding to assist individuals in realizing their full potential. We encourage each individual to make a plan, recognize their personal worth, and accept the help and guidance of their native culture as they move through the recovery process.
Keystone Treatment Center promotes the recognition and identification of Native Americans affected with the addictions of today's society. The healing process begins with finding one's identity and then addresses the physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and family needs of the individual. It is our belief that the Native American client heals through the holistic approach within his/her treatment program. Keystone believes we need to learn about each other before we can help one another.
Our inpatient programming is enhanced for Native American clients with Native American counselors as well as Spiritual and Cultural Advisors on staff, Sweat Lodge accessibility, and Talking Circle.

Introductory Note
Aside from his numerous sermons, Clark authored several longer works, including The Pastor's Testimony Gathered Fragments (1836), and Glimpses of the Old World (1838). In 1835, Clark became a member of the American Tract Society, an organization committed to the evangelical ideal of saving souls for Christ. This goal was to be accomplished, in part, by the distribution of religious tracts to every family in the United States within one generation, and reflects a decided millennial fervor in their work. Clark's health began to decline throughout the 1830s, and in 1837-38 he traveled to Europe in the hopes of regaining his strength. His health having failed to improve, however, he ultimately was compelled to resign his position at St. Andrews in 1843, and on November 27 of that same year he died. The collection spans the period 1828-1842, and consists of twenty-nine small booklets of sermons, two bound volumes of sermons, a booklet that consists of an index of his early sermons, and a certificate from the American Tract Society. The sermons were all written by Clark, and were preached at various locations, including churches in New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Boston, and Philadelphia. Though the collection contains only some of the hundreds of sermons which Clark wrote and preached during his short career, the information which he provided about the date and location of his preaching offers a general indication of his movements over the course of the late 1820s and 1830s.
