This year, one of the oldest faith-based organizations still operating today will mark 180 years. Instituted in 1825, the American Tract Society traces its lineage back through the New York Tract Society (1812) and the New England Tract Society (1814) to the Religious Tract Society of London, begun in 1799.

Time flies swiftly when we are sightseeing; and it was late in the
autumn of 18 when I reached Lindau. Lake Constance lay before me, a
pale, green sheet of water, hemmed in on the south by bold mountain
ranges, filling the interim between the Rhine valley and the long
undulating ridges of the Canton Thurgau. These heights, cleft at
intervals by green smiling valleys and deep ravines, are only the
front of table-land stretching away like an inclined plane, and dotted
with scattered houses and cloistering villages. The deep green of
forest and pasture land was beginning to show the touch of autumn's
pencil; the bright hues striking against gray, rocky walls; the topmost edge of each successive elevation crowned with a sharp outline of golden light, deepening the purple gloom of the shaded slopes. Behind and over this region towers the Sentis, its brow of snow bristling with spear points. It was altogether too late to think of the Baths, or even to look at the little lake of Wallenstatt; and

Historical note:
The New England Religious Tract Society was organized May 23, 1814, and was renamed as the American Tract Society in 1823. In 1825 it merged with the New-York Religious Tract Society to form a new organization, which also called itself the American Tract Society. This American Tract Society distributed non-sectarian Christian pamphlets to a wide cross-section of the American public, and is still active today.

Scope and content:
This collection consists of reports and statistical summaries prepared by American Tract Society tract distributors in Providence' s Ward 5 (what is now known as the Jewelry District). The records do not clearly state whether this was a local affiliate of the ATS or an allied organization, but the statistical summaries clearly state that ATS tracts were being distributed. Some of the reports relate to neighborhoods which apparently extended beyond Ward 5, such as Olneyville. The reports often include detailed information on the homes visited by tract distributors, and the responses that were received. Distribution to Catholics was particularly emphasized and received frequent comment. Most of the reports name the distributors and leave the tract recipients anonymous, but certain reports, such as June and July of 1833, offer specific information on those visited. For example, an entry from August 23 1833 reads: "Mr. Job Seekell's - talked here some with a woman who I afterwards learned was deranged."

Ontario. American Tract Society, founded in New York City, 1825, a merger of some fifty local and sectarian societies, interdenominational and international in its work, for the purpose of publishing and circulating "whatever would best diffuse a knowledge of Christ as the Redeemer and promote the interests of true religion and sound morality." In 1841 it inaugurated a missionary colportage program. By the 1950s its emphasis has emphasized reaching foreign language groups among American immigrants. Its publications were once widely used in Mennonite Sunday schools in America, and found their way into many Mennonite homes in the United States and Canada, especially before the inauguration of denominational publishing programs. The Society remains active. It depends for support upon voluntary contributions from individuals and churches.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MEDIA MAY CALL MARCIA DAVIS, 972-824-8626 or MARK BROWN, 972-276-9408, Ext. 118. American Tract Society Takes Preaching and Politics To Task With Voter Packs Pushing Registration and Salvation Partners with Redeem the Vote — Voter Registration Campaign GRASSROOTS, America (July 15, 2004) —As Presidential Election, 2004, approaches—the American Tract Society (ATS) has kicked open the gate between preaching and politics with a God Bless America Voters Pack. The voter packs mark the first time the 179-year-old gospel publisher, based in Garland, Tex., has incorporated voter registration with gospel tract evangelism. The tract text states that refusing to make a choice in voting or in trusting Christ becomes its own choice. “It’s not about partisanship, it’s about the importance of making a choice to exercise the right to vote and claim the precious freedom for which so many have sacrificed and are sacrificing to give us,” according to ATS President Dan Southern. “Literature in these packs also extends the significant opportunity to make an eternal choice, that of choosing Christ as a personal savior, and the eternal freedom that choice brings.” “We are asking folks across the country to participate in one of the most important activities available to them this year—voting; and make one of the most important choices they can make in a lifetime—trusting Christ. I think we have created a unique evangelism opportunity for Christians to share their faith and serve their country. Churches, faith-based groups and individuals are getting on board and planning to distribute the tracts at special events and in neighborhood canvases,” Southern said.

Bible, tract groups tailor biblical message for disasters By Adelle M. Banks
    Religion News Service
September 24, 2001 As members of the staff of the American Tract Society gathered around their conference room television set on Sept. 11, they, like everyone else, were shocked by the terrorist acts. "Everybody was glued to the TV," recalled Mark Brown, spokesman of the ministry based in Garland, Texas. "We literally just dropped to our knees and asked God, `What can we do?'" The answer that came to them, said Brown, was to do what they always do: make tracts, small evangelistic pieces that relate the gospel to current times. Across the country, Bible societies and ministries such as the tract society have quickly responded to the nation's crisis by distributing portions of Scripture and brochures with Bible passages to encourage and inspire Americans. On Monday night, Gene Habecker, president of the Bible society, said he and other staffers on the street outside their building found that people of a variety of faiths welcomed the free Scriptures. He was particularly struck by one man who filled his bags with the booklets. "He said, `By the way, I'm Muslim and it's important that all of us during this time work hard to share the words of God with everyone that we know,'" Habecker recalled.
