Book Club Nostalgia Catalogs ... Named for the Book Helen Bannerman ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Helen Watson (1860s-1946) was the daughter of an army chaplain whose work took his family to many parts of the British Empire. Born in Edinburgh in the 1860's, Helen went to live in Madeira when she was two, was taught by her father until age ten, and then sent back to Scotland to be educated. In 1889 Helen Watson married William Bannerman, a surgeon in the Indian medical service of the British army, with whom she she lived in India for the next 30 years. In 1898 after a trip to visit her two daughters being educated in Scotland, she wrote a "picture letter" to her daughters to while away the tedium of the journey and, as she said, to comfort herself for the absence of her family. Friends persuaded her to have the story published. Small in size, "because as a child, she had always wanted a book she could hold in her own tiny hands," Little Black Sambo has remained popular ever since. She was about 83 when she died on October 13, 1946. LOGANBERRY LEGACY
Little Black Sambo
: you know the story. Despite all the debates circulating around it, it is still very popular, both with collectors of vintage Black memorabilia, as well as those who just remember liking the story when they were kids. There's even a Little Golden Book version that seems to strike many memory chords.

THE UNIQUELY CHRISTIAN COMMANDMENT
Delivered Text: John 13:34-35 To read endnotes, click on the the note number, then click on the to return to your place in the text.
Maundy Thursday. Strange term. One night when Erin was little, my wife was trying to tell her about Maundy Thursday. Erin said, "MONDAY Thursday."
"No," said Christie, "MAUNDY Thursday."
"Right," responded Erin, "MONDAY Thursday." Christie gave up.
The designation "Maundy Thursday" comes from an ancient Latin anthem traditionally sung at the commemoration of the Last Supper, " Mandatum Novum Do Vobis ," which means, "I give you a new commandment," from the scripture lesson we just read. Indeed, another way of identifying this day might be COMMANDMENT Thursday. "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another."
Have you ever felt uncomfortable with that? I have. To be honest, I would just as soon have no commandments at all - I have never liked being told what I could or could not do. I would prefer that the words from Mt. Sinai had been the Ten SUGGESTIONS or that the laws from Washington and Harrisburg be simply RECOMMENDATIONS, but I know rules are necessary for an orderly society, and I am willing to put up with them. All I ask is that the rules be defined clearly enough so I might know whether or not I am doing what I should. We all feel that way. The special problem I have with THIS commandment to "love one another" is that it sounds so OPEN-ENDED. It strikes me as a bit like a traffic law requiring that we DRIVE AT A SAFE SPEED without the law ever saying what the limits are. I would be uncomfortable with that too.

Land of Enchantment
British Fantasy Illustration in the Golden Age
An Exhibition
September 27, 1997
through
January 31, 1998 The Watkinson Library at Trinity College
Hartford, Connecticut The late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Britain saw a proliferation of sumptuously illustrated books, incorporating fantasy in its many facets. The times were right, with the social and political climate favorable to fantastic and visionary literature and art. An expanding British empire was sparking fascination with the non-Western world, giving rise to illustrations of exotic, far-away lands. At the same time, increasing interest in revivalism (Gothic, Medieval, and Renaissance), exotism, and spiritualism found a natural outlet in fantastic themes. Fantasy was a form of escapism from an increasingly industrialized lifestyle and the often rigid confines of Victorian society. While fantastic illustration is difficult to define and covers a broad spectrum, it usually involves the supernatural world or some other unreal element. Recurring themes in fantasy illustration include: folk and fairy tales, historic myths and legends, the horrific and grotesque, and the anthropomorphization of animals and flowers. Exhibited items represent these prevalent themes from the "Golden Age" of illustration in Britain which flourished from the mid-nineteenth century until the First World War. The illustrators included are British citizens, both native-born and emigrants, as well as non-citizens who had successful works published in England.
