Choice of Books by Sir John Lubbock (1896)
Lubbock's list was first published in 1886. I have transcribed the version published in 1896 and noted changes made by the time it was reprinted in 1930. "I drew up the list, not as that of the hundred best books, but, which is very different, of those which have been most frequently recommended as best worth reading."
For more about this list and Lubbock's part in starting the Great Books Movement, see "Where Did the Great Books Come From Anyway?" by W. B. Carnochan, Stanford Humanities Review

This collection developed from an interest in the evolution of bookbinding design as applied to publishers' editions. It features representative examples of work by more than 40 artists who were active during the "golden age" of commercial cover design. The catalog essays approach the various design paradigms from their aesthetic influences and social contexts. A bibliography of the resources used to build this collection will be in the catalog, including the works of Sue Allen, Charles Gullans and John Espey, Jean Peters; Trade Bindings Research Newsletter; publications and exhibition catalogs of The Grolier Club and more. There are examples of different editions of the same title, often published simultaneously under different imprints, with different covers . There are editions released by a publisher with several bindings at different price points , and for different tastes . Door-to-door subscription sales used sample books with some of the content of the edition, with a choice of cover designs that often included plain or elaborately stamped cloth or leather to harmonize with any home library or budget.

    THE STORY OF DAVID

    By J. H. Willard
    Philadelphia - Henry Altemus Company
Now in the Public Domain - Copy Freely When the fickle Israelites clamored for a king, in the days of the Prophet Samuel, Saul the Benjamite, towering in stature over all the nation, was the one selected by God in accordance with the qualities desired by his subjects. He was a man swayed by moods and impulses; at one time carried away by passion, at another, plunged in remorse and despair. Twice in the fitful career of Saul, he disobeyed the direct commands of God, and because he did not restrain his impatience in the first instance, and preferred his own inclination and prospective glory in the second, he was compelled to hear from the lips of God's messenger, the decree that his kingdom would not be inherited by any of his family, but would be given to "a neighbor of thine, that is better than thou." It was with the after life of this man, chafing under the knowledge that in the sight of God he was but a nominal king, that the life of David the shepherd boy was to be strangely intermingled. At Bethlehem, the little town where Jesus the Christ was born more than one thousand years afterwards, lived a man named Jesse, who was the grandson of Ruth, the beautiful Moabitess. Jesse had eight sons, and God told Samuel that He would choose a successor to Saul from among them.
