(IF you have a fast connection) Faculty Positions: We are recruiting for two faculty positions, one based at the University of Washington Medical Center and the other at the Seattle Veteran's Administration Hospital. Both involve a broad spectrum of Plastic Surgery, including cosmetic and microsurgery, as well as teaching and research. Contact Nicholas Vedder at 206 731 3209. The geezer (age 63) was awarded an NIH R21 grant for to study gene expression in wounds on the Duroc pig. The hypothesis is that the "cause" of hypertrophic scarring occurs within 2 or 3 months of wounding and that the cones of skin are somehow involved in the process. The wounds will be studied with the new porcine microarray available from Affymetrix. Drs. Gibran and Isik are significantly involved. Upward and onward to the Nobel prize :)

Robert Shakno joins CWRU
Robert J. Shakno has joined the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine as the vice dean and associate vice president for medical affairs. Shakno, whose health care career spans 37 years, will be responsible for overseeing and directing the medical school's administrative support functions. These areas include finance and planning, affiliate hospital relations, research administration, personnel and administrative services, facilities management, and technology transfer. He replaces James McGovern, Ph.D., who left to become president of the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Missouri.
"Robert Shakno is one of the most respected health care executives in Cleveland and the nation," said Nathan A. Berger, M.D., vice president for medical affairs and dean of the medical school. "Through his work at the Mt. Sinai System and elsewhere, he understands the mission of an academic medical center and the challenges that we face in today's evolving market. He brings a wealth of experience, knowledge, and skills which will be a tremendous asset to the school's operations."
