Alger, Horatio
Horatio Alger, Jr. (1832-1899) was a prolific juvenile writer, having written more than 100 works of fiction which sold in excess of 200 million copies. These numbers make him the best-selling American writer of all time. His stories appeared in a variety of formats, including serial publications, monographs, and ephemeral pamphlets. In addition to publishing under his own name, it is known that Alger published other stories using pseudonyms. It is likely, therefore, that many of Alger's stories are lost and the true number may never be known.

Alger, Horatio
Encyclopedia Article Alger, Horatio (1832-1899), American writer, born in Revere, Massachusetts, and educated at Harvard College and Harvard Divinity School. Ordained a Unitarian minister in 1864, Alger became chaplain of a lodging house for newsboys in New York City in 1866. In Alger's first volume of fiction, Ragged Dick (1867), and in similar works, such as Luck and Pluck (1869) and Tattered Tom (1871), he portrayed underprivileged youths who win fame and wealth by practicing the virtues of honesty, diligence, and perseverance. Alger wrote more than 100 such works. Although they have little literary significance, his novels influenced American youth by emphasizing merit, rather than mere social status, as the chief determinant of success. His works became so closely identified with this theme that the stories of people who succeeded through the strength of their own efforts became known as “Horatio Alger tales.” How to cite this article:

Horatio Alger
Horatio Alger, Jr. (1832-1899), briefly a Unitarian minister, was a popular nineteenth-century author of juvenile fiction. His "rags to riches" stories portrayed poor boys in America making good. Because Horatio, Jr. was near-sighted and had bronchial asthma, his father tutored him at home until he was ten. A good student, by the time he was eight he had started to study Latin and algebra. Although the family still lived in "genteel poverty" there was enough money for him to go to Gates Academy in Marlborough until he was fifteen. His instruction included mathematics, classics, and several modern languages. During this period some of his compositions were published in local newspapers. He attended Harvard, 1848-52, from which he graduated (A.B.) with Phi Beta Kappa honors. Addison Brown, a classmate, described him as "intelligent, faithful, industrious, and [a] quick scholar . . . with natural literary aptitudes." Alger worked the next several years as a teacher and journalist. He penned stories and poems for magazines. His first two books were

Name: Horatio Alger Birth Date: Death Date: Place of Birth: Revere, Massachusetts, United States Place of Death: Natick, Massachusetts, United States Nationality: American Gender: Male Occupations: author Horatio Alger Main Biography Horatio Alger (1832-1899) was the American author of prodigiously popular and influential juvenile novels and biographies. Horatio Alger was born in Revere, Mass., the son of a Unitarian minister. The fervent father so rigorously supervised his son's early training that at 9 the boy was known as "Holy Horatio." Soon he was doing superior work at Gates Academy and, later, at Harvard, from which he graduated at 19. After a few years as a tutor and journalist, he acceded to his father's wishes and enrolled in the Harvard Divinity School; he received his diploma in 1860. But instead of entering the ministry, thanks to an unexpected inheritance he was enabled to go abroad, and free from parental supervision he enjoyed 7 months of bohemian travel. Returning home, he served as a Unitarian minister until 1866, when he moved to New York to make it his home until his very last years. Having already published four moderately successful books for children, Alger decided to continue writing. With

http://www.poetry-archive.com/a/carving_a_name.html
CARVING A NAME by: Horatio Alger (1832-1899)
    WROTE my name upon the sand,
    And trusted it would stand for aye;
    But, soon, alas! the refluent sea
    Had washed my feeble lines away.

    I carved my name upon the wood,
    And, after years, returned again;
    I missed the shadow of the tree
    That stretched of old upon the plain.

    To solid marble next, my name
    I gave as a perpetual trust;
    An earthquake rent it to its base,
    And now it lies, o'erlaid with dust.

    All these have failed. In wiser mood
    I turn and ask myself, "What then?"
    If I would have my name endure,
    I'll write it on the hearts of men,

    In characters of living light,
    Of kindly deeds and actions wrought.
    And these, beyond the touch of time,
    Shall live immortal as my thought.

35. John Maynard, By Horatio Alger
Complete text of the poem by Horatio Alger about a heroic sailor named John Maynard . by Horatio Alger (18321899). WAS on Lake Erie s broad expanse
http://www.poetry-archive.com/a/john_maynard.html
JOHN MAYNARD by: Horatio Alger (1832-1899)
    WAS on Lake Erie's broad expanse
    One bright midsummer day,
    The gallant steamer Ocean Queen
    Swept proudly on her way.
    Bright faces clustered on the deck,
    Or, leaning o'er the side,
    Watched carelessly the feathery foam
    That flecked the rippling tide.

    Ah, who beneath that cloudless sky,
    That smiling bends serene,
    Could dream that danger awful, vast,
    Impended o'er the scene,
    Could dream that ere an hour had sped
    That frame of sturdy oak
    Would sink beneath the lake's blue waves,
    Blackened with fire and smoke?

    A seaman sought the captain's side,
    A moment whispered low;
    The captain's swarthy face grew pale;
    He hurried down below.
    Alas, too late! Though quick, and sharp,
    And clear his orders came,
    No human efforts could avail
    To quench the insidious flame.

    The bad news quickly reached the deck,
    It sped from lip to lip,
    And ghastly Faces everywhere
    Looked from the doomed ship.
    "Is there no hopeno chance of life?"
    A hundred lips implore,
    "But one," the captain made reply,
    "To run the ship on shore."

Ragged Dick or, Street Life in New York
Author Info: Horatio Alger
Your great grandfathers read them by the fistful. Even your grandfathers probably read at least a few of them. But the days when Horatio Alger was one of the most widely read authors in America have long since passed. Alger's messagethat by dint of hard work, decent morals, good manners and a hefty serving of luck, any American boy can rise from rags to richesis so clearly anathema to the literati that his dismissal by the critics and the continuing refusal to treat his work as anything other than simple-minded boosterism was virtually foreordained. However, you would think that Alger's novels would warrant greater scrutiny simply for their obvious cultural impact. It is not an overstatement to say that it is likely that every significant man of business, politics, literature and academia in America in the early decades of this century had read the works of Horatio Alger. How can you hope to understand these men and the America that they forged if you ignore the one author who was most likely a formative influence on them? More than that, it is certainly the case that except for a couple of decades of despair brought on by the Great Depression, it is, has been, and seems sure to remain, the uniquely American idea that anyone can succeed. It is amazing the number of times you will hear folks from foreign countries speak about how this perception of unlimited possibilities is something that you only find in America (Howard Evans on Booknotes one night springs to mind). This after all is why we are the one nation that welcomes immigrants. Other countries assume that immigrants will just get on the dole and stay there; we assume they will not only succeed, but will flourish. Alger is certainly not the originator of these belief, but his millions of books must have contributed something to this entrepreneurial spirit that informs the national soul.
