American author, known for her children' books, especially LITTLE WOMEN (1868). Unknown to her family and the public, Alcott begun writing 'rubbish novels', sometimes anonymously, sometimes as 'A.N. Barnard', to contribute to the family income. Above man's aims his nature rose.
The wisdom of a just content Made one small spot a continent, And tuned to poetry Life's prose.
(from Louisa May Alcott, Her Life Letters, and Journals, 1889) By 1860 both her short stories and poems began to appear in the Atlantic Monthly (now The Atlantic ). As an ardent abolitionist she volunteered in the American Civil War as a nurse and served in 1862-1863 at the Union Hospital in Georgetown, D.C.. During this time Alcott contracted typhoid from which she never completely recovered. In 1863 Alcott published her letters in book form under the title HOSPITAL SKETCHES. The work was well received and encouraged her to continue with her writing aspirations. "No, dear; the dress is proper and becoming as it is, and the old fashion of simplicity the best for all of us. I don't want my Polly to be loved for her clothes, but for herself; so wear the plain frocks mother took such pleasure in making for you, and let the panniers go. The least of us have some influence in this big world; and perhaps my little girl can do some good by showing others that a contended heart and a happy face are better ornaments than any Paris can give her."

Domestic Goddess Louisa May Alcott is perhaps most famous for writing Little Women , (1868) a novel which is partially autobiographical and has shaped the way many women since the Victorian era have defined womanhood, family, and girlhood. Since the early 1970's, the public has known about the stories that Alcott published under the pseudonym A. M. Barnard. These gothic "potboilers" are filled with delightfully feminist femmes fatales, intrigue, and dare-we-say-it, smut (at least by Victorian standards). Read more about this author, who was more versatile than many of us knew. Born in 1832 in to Bronson (a noted Transcendentalist who was friends with Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry David Thoreau, among others) and Abba Alcott (daughter of Colonel Joseph May and a vocal proponent for women's rights and abolition), Louisa May Alcott constantly struggled with the anger and individualistic spirit that came naturally to her. Bronson Alcott's belief that children were tabulae rasae femmes fatales As a Transcendental and a Victorian, Bronson tended to see his duty as a parent in the same light as reformers of the time, who stressed their belief that heredity and parenting were "the means to create new generations" and that one must encourage "having all that is great, and noble, and good in man, all that is pure, and virtuous, and beautiful, and angelic in woman" (William Alcott, qtd. in Russett 199). The Victorian understanding of child-rearing included the idea that "parents, ensuring their own physical and mental health by right living, could pass this health on to their offspring" (Russett 199). Bronson firmly embraced the ideas that as a parent, he could make the world a better place by molding his daughters to imitate his own perfection. His attempts to make Louisa more like himself caused a great deal of inner conflict for her.

Louisa May Alcott
Louisa May Alcott was born on November 29, 1832, in Germantown, Pennsylvania. She spent her childhood in Boston and Concord, Massachusetts, where she met Ralph Waldo Emerson and took nature walks with Henry David Thoreau. When her family encountered financial difficulties, Alcott took on any jobs she could find and was eventually able to turn her love for writing into a source of income as several of her poems and short stories appeared in popular magazines. Her first book, Flower Fables, was published in 1855. Then, during the Civil War, Alcott moved to Washington, D.C. to serve as a nurse, where she contracted typhoid as well as mercury poisoning from the medicines used to cure it at the time, from which she would suffer for the rest of her life. However, she was able to turn her experiences in Washington into Hospital Sketches, which was published in 1863. Soon after, her publisher, Thomas Niles, asked her to write “a story for girls.” In two and half months, Alcott wrote Little Women, which was based on her own experiences of growing up with three sisters. It was published in 1868, and became an immediate success. In the years before her death on March 6th, 1888, Alcott published over 30 books and collections of short stories, leaving a legacy of wonderful stories to be enjoyed by generations of young readers.

    "Louisa May Alcott was born on 29 November, 1832; her father's 33rd birthday. She was the second of Amos and his wife Abba May's four daughters, and was brought up in Concord, Massachusetts. Educated at home Louisa was fascinated by books and from an early age recalls 'playing with books in my father's study - looking at pictures, pretending to read, and scribbling on blank pages whenever pen or pencil could be found'. "Alcott never married, and many of her essays explore the possibilities of a single life for women. In 1862 she volunteered as a nurse in a Civil War army hospital in Washington but after only six weeks she contracted typhoid fever and was forced to return home. The break from her family and her experiences gave her the material for her first successful book, Hospital Sketches "The success of Little Women in 1868 brought both fame and the financial security she had so long desired for her family and she went on to write other stories in the same vein;

    Louisa May Alcott
    Louisa May was the second daughter of Amos Bronson Alcott and Abigail May Alcott . As with his first daughter, Anna Bronson Alcott , Bronson made careful observations of Louisa's behavior as an infant and upon these based unpublished manuscripts. As early as age 16 Louisa dreamed of adding to the family's meager income through writing. Before writing, however, she was employed as a teacher at various schools and in late 1862 and early 1863 served as an army nurse in Washington, DC. Unfortunately, this experience left her with typhoid-pneumonia and mercury poisoning that plagued her health the rest of her life. Among her first works were Flower Fables Hospital Sketches (1863), and Moods (1865, 1882). Thanks to Louisa's generosity and hard work as a popular and prolific children's author, the Alcott family finally was able to obtain enough money to escape poverty. Of her many poems, plays, novels, and short stories, her most famous are Little Women (1868 - 1869) and Little Men

    Autor: Alcottt, Louisa May

    English version Fecha y lugar de nacimiento: Nació el 29 de Nov. de 1832 en Germantown, Pa., U.S. Falleció el 6 de Marzo 6 de 1888 en Boston Vida y obras: Louisa May Alcott es conocida sobre todo por su obra clásica "Mujercitas" , la historia de cuatro hermanas creciendo juntas en una ciudad de Nueva Inglaterra a mediados del siglo XIX. El Padre de Louisa May, el Sr. Bronson Alcott, fue un filósofo y reformador educativo cuyos proyectos ideales mantuvieron a la familia en una pobreza constante, de la que no consiguieron salir hasta la publicación de "Mujercitas" . Sin embargo, la familia Alcott fue rica por lo que respecta a sus amistades, que incluyeron algunas figuras notables como Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, y Nathaniel Hawthorne. Las hermanas March Meg, Jo, Beth, y Amy han sido inmortalizadas asimismo en algunos largometrajes; la más famosa "Jo" fue Katherine Hepburn. Louisa pasó la mayor parte de su vida en Boston y Concord (Massachussets), creciendo en la compañía de Ralph Waldo Emerson, Theodore Parker, Henry David Thoreau. Se dió cuenta rápidamente de que su padre era demasiado poc práctico para mantener a su mujer y cuatro hijas; después del fracaso de "Fruitlands", una comunidad utópica que había fundado, comenzó la preocupación de Louisa por el bienestar de la familia, circunstancia que se prolongaría durante toda su vida. Impartió clases durante un breve período de tiempo, trabajó como asistenta, y finalmente empezó a escribir, produciendo obras para ganar algún dinero al principio, y paulatinamente trabajos más serios. Después del inicio de la Guerra Civil Americana se hizo enfermera voluntaria y contrajo las fiebres tifoideas debido a las nada saludables condiciones hospitalarias y fue enviada a casa. Nunca volvió a recuperar completamente la salud, pero la publicación de sus cartas en forma de libro
