    http://www.jlpp.jp/english/list/works01/main.html
Courtesy of KYODO NEWS A younger contemporary of Mori Ohgai, and the most famous short-story writer in Japan, Akutagawa is noted for his finely crafted stories which, with sarcastic humor, explore the underside of human nature. Born in Tokyo, Ryunosuke was named after his birth sign of the Dragon, taking the family name from his uncle, Mr.Akutagawa who adopted him owing to his mother's mental disorder. A good scholar in English and Chinese classics, he majored in English literature at Tokyo University where he made his debut as a new writer of 'New Currents of Thought' with HANA (1916) earning praise from Natsume Soseki. From his graduation in 1916 until his marriage with Tsukamoto Fumiko in 1918, he published early valuable works while teaching English at Yokosuka naval engineering school; "IMOGAYU"(1916); "HANKECHI"(1916); "HOKYONIN NO SHI" (1918).
"YABU NO NAKA", one of his representative works in the middle period from 1919 to 1922, provided the material for the film, "Rashomon" by Kurosawa Akira, along with "RASHOMON"(1915). His deteriorating health influenced his final autobiographical works, like "KAPPA"(1927) and "HAGURUMA" (1927). The Akutagawa Prize, which was established eight years after his suicide at the age of 35 (1927), became the most prestigious biannual award for new promising writers in Japan. → "AKUTAGAWA RYUNOSUKE" column

    What is Haiku?
Haiku is one of the most important form of traditional japanese poetry. Haiku is, today, a 17-syllable verse form consisting of three metrical units of 5, 7, and 5 syllables. Since early days, there has been confusion between the three related terms Haiku, Hokku and Haikai. The term hokku literally means "starting verse", and was the first starting link of a much longer chain of verses known as haika. Because the hokku set the tone for the rest of the poetic chain, it enjoyed a privileged position in haikai poetry, and it was not uncommon for a poet to compose a hokku by itself without following up with the rest of the chain. Largely through the efforts of Masaoka Shiki, this independence was formally established in the 1890s through the creation of the term haiku.

    http://www.crock11.freeserve.co.uk/rajomon.htm
Little Known Kyoto: - The Gate Known as Rajomon / Rashomon The Emperor Kammu created his new capital, Heian-Kyo (Kyoto) in 784 AD, and styled it on the rectangular Chinese city design. Rashomon was the name of the great southern gate that traversed the southern boundary of the central street (Suzaku Avenue) - the street that led directly to the Nijo, the Imperial Palace (Rashomon means literally "castle gate"). The gate was larger than the nandaimon at Nara's Todaiji temple. With its brilliant painted and tiled décor, it was one of the two most spectacular gates of the city (together with the suzakumon at the Imperial Palace). In Tales of Old Japan Mitford tells the story of Shudendoji, the "demon of Rasho gate" who was sorely troubling the men of Kyoto by carrying off all the most beautiful maidens. The hero Yorimitsu (948-1021) eventually put an end to this nonsense, and returned to the Emperor with the head of the monster. The fame of his action "was spread abroad under heaven." Although they were roughly contemporary with Yorimitsu, the great writers of the Heian era such as Sei Shonagon and Murasaki Shikibu made no reference to the gate, which (according to some historians) suggests that it may already have disappeared by the 11th century. Neither, for that matter, is it mentioned in the 12th century

    by a High Police Commissioner
Yes, sir. Certainly, it was I who found the body. This morning, as usual, I went to cut my daily quota of cedars, when I found the body in a grove in a hollow in the mountains. The exact location? About 150 meters off the Yamashina stage road. It's an out-of-the-way grove of bamboo and cedars. The body was lying flat on its back dressed in a bluish silk kimono and a wrinkled head-dress of the Kyoto style. A single sword-stroke had pierced the breast. The fallen bamboo-blades around it were stained with bloody blossoms. No, the blood was no longer running. The wound had dried up, I believe. And also, a gad-fly was stuck fast there, hardly noticing my footsteps. You ask me if I saw a sword or any such thing? No, nothing, sir. I found only a rope at the root of a cedar near by. And . . . well, in addition to a rope, I found a comb. That was all. Apparently he must have made a battle of it before he was murdered, because the grass and fallen bamboo-blades had been trampled down all around. "A horse was near by?"

This new form of poetry was to be written, read and understood as an independent poem, complete in itself, rather than part of a longer chain. Strictly speaking, then, the history of haiku begins only in the last years of the 19th century. The famous verses of such Edo-period (1600-1868) masters as
