Monterey Bay, California back to Grand Research Challenges home page The third in a series of Computing Research Association (CRA) Conferences on "Grand Research Challenges" in Computer Science and Engineering will be held at the beautiful SeaScape Resort, Monterey Bay, California, on December 4-7, 2005. This year's GRC conference will focus on the theme "Revitalizing Computer Architecture Research." Attendance is limited to 50 people and will be by invitation only. Those interested in attending the conference were asked to submit a two-page (or less) statement of one to three examples of a "grand research challenge" problem in computer architecture by August 12, 2005. The organizing committee will invite prospective attendees based on the statements submitted. Submitters will be advised of the results of the selection process as soon as they are available. If there are multiple authors, correspondence will be with the principal author. Note that individuals who are invited must commit to attending for the entire three-day conference (beginning Sunday, December 4 at 6 pm, ending after lunch on Wednesday, December 7).

http://popindex.princeton.edu/search/help/author.html
Search by Author
You can search Population Index by author entering one or more names in the author field. We illustrate the procedure for both personal and corporate authors.
Personal Authors
Personal authors have one or more surnames, often followed by a name and/or initials. Sample entries in the database include "Coale, Ansley J." and "McDonald, John W". We include all authors of each citation, not just the first. Instead of indexing authors, our search engine uses an index of words that appear in the author field. Thus, the first example is indexed under "Coale" and "Ansley", while the second is indexed under "McDonald" and "John". Note that we ignore initials and punctuation marks. We also ignore diacritical marks. To search this field we recommend that you specify surnames and, optionally, first names. The order is immaterial. The output will consist of the entries that include all the words you have specified, as the following examples illustrate. Example 1: To retrieve a list of papers by Ansley Coale, type "Coale" in the author field. Since Ansley is the only Coale in our database, you will get exactly what you want.

4. Text Documentation
Text documentation, such as footnotes, notes, reference lists, and bibliographies, share three common purposes: they supplement information presented in a report or article, aid the reader by explaining or elaborating on points made in the text, and identify the author's sources. Whether paraphrasing or quoting an author directly, you must credit the source. The keys to a well-documented report are simplicity, thoroughness, internal consistency, and reader's convenience. This chapter provides basic guidelines and sample formats for the types of text documentation most frequently required in EIA reports. The formats have been adapted from the numerous citation methods discussed in the Government Printing Office Style Manual and the more comprehensive Chicago Manual of Style , the APA (American Psychological Association) Editorial Style The New York Public Library Writer's Guide to Style and Usage , the MLA (Modern Language Association) Handbook for Writers of Research Papers , and from Internet information. Authors should consult with editors if they encounter cases not discussed or shown in this chapter or search on the Internet for more detailed citation guidelines. Perhaps it is premature to point out Internet addresses here because they continually change; however, as of the latest revision to this manual - on 9/21/2000 - the following addresses were active:

Writers Institute schedule begins with Capital Region natives' play about female boxer
MICHAEL VIRTANEN
Features editor The New York State Writers Institute plans to begin its Irish-influenced spring schedule with the dramatic arts in early February in collaboration with Capital Repertory Co. and the University at Albany Theater Department. But before Ireland, storied land of fine playwrights, poets and novelists, takes hold, the first entry comes from once local writers and concerns an American prizefighter. Next Monday, Feb. 1, a staged reading of "Blackjack'' will be presented at Capital Repertory Theatre in Albany, a play-in-progress about a female boxer's rise to fame. It comes from the pens of Erin Marie Tschantret, an Albany native, actor and nascent playwright, and Stephen de Seve, musician, screenwriter, Raymertown native. "It is a comedy. I call it a drama/comedy,'' Tschantret said in a recent phone call from Manasquan, N.J., "a little beach town'' where she was appearing in "Thieves Carnival'' at the Algonquin Theater. "And it's racy. I'd say it's rated R. It's not for kids.'' "It's basically a story about a female boxer in New York, and she really . . . there's a line in the play that says you're only as great as your greatest challenge, and I think all the characters face that,'' Tschantret said. "Either you have to face being mediocre or get your a off the couch.''

Adding Web Space Access for Multiple Authors
In many cases, multiple people are editing pages in a particular group web space. LUIR recommends that, instead of sharing the account and password, the additional authors be allowed access to the webspace using an ACL (access control list). This has three advantages:
  • The authors can use their own userids and passwords to edit, upload or publish to the web pages, instead of having to remember another id and password. The authors can be given access to specific parts of the account, not to the entire AFS account (including email and any other privileges). The last author to edit/upload a given page can be determined (by going into the webspace at a unix prompt and entering ls -la
  • There are three parts to the process of using an ACL to add access:
  • Create a 'group' for the authors in the account to which access will be given. Add the authors' userids to the group. Give the group access to the appropriate directories.
  • Creating the Group
To create the group, log on with the userid of the account in which the webspace lives. You can do this on an AFS workstation, the Compute Servers, or the Network Server. If you log in via the Network Server, type
