    Abstract:
This essay is the story of the crimes, pursuit, and eventual arrest in Venice of an eighteenth- century imposter named Tomaso Gerachi. His principal charge was having "falsified his essence" by wearing the noble toga and assuming noble titles in order to gamble with patricians. Among the court documents is a 54-page self-defense dictated by Gerachi that provides a rare glimpse into the mind of the imposter. The extraordinary efforts to arrest, convict, and punish him suggest that the case involved more than a commoner dressing out of station. Its many layers, revealed over the course of his pursuit and interrogation, expose a range of sensitive issues for eighteenth-century Venice, including noble identity, the mingling of classes under the cover of masks, and an emergent view of identity that rejected social roles for a more malleable, "sincere" self. Introduction: This collection, The Viennese Theatre, 1740-1790 , was previously titled: German and Austrian Drama. The main part of the Harvard collection of 18th-century dramatic texts published in the Austrian empire, Germany, and Switzerland in German, French, and Italian, was acquired en bloc Included in the collection are not only great masterpieces by such authors as Goethe, Wieland, Lessing, and Schiller, but a host of minor works by lesser dramatists that give perspective to the whole. An old library like Harvard had of course a fair number of 18th-century plays on its shelves before the Krieg collection was acquired, and we have bought more as they came on the market. We continue to add to the total of about 2,500 individual items as opportunity and funds permit. (The guide contains well over 3,000 entries, but many of these are so-called analytical entries for plays gathered together in large collections such as Neue Sammlung deutscher Schauspiele , and the like.) This number, while perhaps not equaling what is to be found in the combined holdings of the Nationalbibliothek and Stadtbibliothek in Vienna, is nevertheless probably the largest in the United States. For that reason we welcomed the Research Publication’s (now Primary Source Microfilm, an imprint of the Gale Group) project of filming the collection and making it available to a wider range of users than could be served within the confines of the Houghton Library at Harvard. The fact that the collection is now on microfilm, however, places certain restrictions on the form and content of the catalog here published, which must be thought of first and foremost as an institutional guide to the reels of film, and only then as a general bibliographical tool for individuals interested in 18th-century drama who may not own the film. I hope, however, that both owners and nonowners will find the catalog useful for their respective purposes. All of the plays have been given full bibliographical treatment, so that the catalog contains far more detailed descriptions than have hitherto been available for so large a body of material. The great bulk of the plays are dated between 1740 and 1800, though some go back to earlier years of the 18th century. Our cut-off date of 1800 had to be arbitrarily chosen and inevitably creates some anomalies: it means that we include Schiller’s

A year later, Dryden turned the table around and began writing in blank verse . This led him to the creation of his greatest play, All For Love (1678). After becoming Poet Laureate (1668) and historiographer royal (1670), Dryden produced a series of satires . His most successful was Absalom and Achitopel (1681). The same decade also withheld Religio laici The Hind and The Panther (1687), and William III (1688). Before his death at the age of 69, Dryden also wrote a few critical works.
Pepys, Samuel

Samuel Pepys was born in London, England and was educated at Cambridge. After going to university, Pepys joined the naval service and quickly moved up the ranks which soon brought him to the position as a secretary to the Admiralty (1672). After being accused of taking part in the Popish Plot (1679), Pepys was imprisoned and lost his position in office. In 1684, Pepys was reappointed to his position, and in that same year he also was appointed the president of the Royal Society. Pepys was never a major writer but from January 1, 1660, to May 31, 1669, he held a diary. His philosophy on everyday subjects and his paragraphs on the Great Plague (1665-1666), The Great Fire of London (1666), and the arrival of the Dutch fleet (1665-1667), have made his diary intriguing to many. Due to the diary being written in cipher, the diary was not decoded until 1825. Pepys died at the age of 76.

Joseph Addison
Joseph Addison was born at Milston, Wiltshire, in 1672. He was a student at the Charter House, which he left in 1687 to enter Queen's College, Oxford. After two years he was transferred to Magdalen, where he was graduated in 1693. He distinguished himself while at college for his shyness and his scholarship. In the year of his graduation he published his Account of the Greatest English Poets. ÝThrough Dryden, to whom he addressed some complimentary verses, he was introduced to Tonson, who set him to work translating Juvenal, Persius, Virgil, and Heredotus. While he was still at Oxford, where he remained on a fellowship after his graduation, he was on the point of taking orders, but a royal pension was obtained for him, and he set forth on his travels on the Continent. He started in 1699, spent a year and a half in France, a year in Italy, and another in Switzerland, Austria, and Germany; and after a stay of some months in Holland, he returned to England toward the end of 1703. He was reduced in circumstances, and had little hope of preferment in politics, so that he was forced to join the writers in Grub Street. But, owing to a change in the tide of affairs, and to Addison's popularity after the publication of his poem, The Campaign

http://www.constitution.org/addison/cato_play.htm
Cato (A Tragedy in Five Acts) by Joseph Addison (1672 - 1719) Rendered with this introduction by Richard Lewis of Stoic Voice Journal I take great pleasure in presenting the following rendering of Joseph Addison's play Cato . I first became aware of the play while reading the writings of Jim Stockdale. In an essay on public virtue, he writes: "George Washington was so taken with the character of Cato the younger in Joseph Addison's 1713 play Cato that he made the Roman republican his role model. He went to see Cato numerous times from early manhood into maturity and even had it performed for his troops at Valley Forge despite a congressional resolution that plays were inimical to republican virtue. Washington included lines from the play in his private correspondence and even in his farewell address." ( Thoughts of a Philosophical Fighter Pilot , Hoover Press, 1995, p.75.) Of course, this perked my interest and sent me out in search of Cato . As fate would have it, I found a very worn 1848 edition of The Works of Joseph Addison in three volumes at our local college in Helena and was given permission to borrow the volume containing Cato for several months to copy the text.
