Julian's account of J. Addison: Addison's hymn in 'Spiritual Songs' is No. 297. "When all Thy mercies, O my God". This hymn is included in all the editions of the Little Flock Hymn Book from 1856-1978. There was a controversy about this hymn. Claims were made for other two men for the authorship. The main evidence is in favour of Addison. This evidence is available in Julian's Hymnology. Addison wrote an essay on "Gratitude". In the essay he wrote the following. "If gratitude is due from man to man, how much more from man to his Maker? The Supreme Being does not only shower upon us those bounties which proceed more immediately from His hand, but even those benefits which are conveyed to us by others. Every blessing we enjoy, by what means soever it may be derived upon us is the gift of Him Who is the great Author of good, and the Father of mercies. The essay closes with:- When all Thy mercies, O my God

Joseph Addison - (1672-1719)
Addison was born in Wiltshire, but soon after Joseph's birth his father was appointed Dean of Lichfield and the Addison family moved into the Cathedral Close. Joseph Addison was educated at Lichfield Grammar School. As a young man his literary fame grew rapidly and with his friend Richard Steele, he contributed essays to the 'Tatler' . His later work, the 'Spectator' , containing essays by himself, Steele, Pope, and others, is the most famous and influential of all 18th century magazines. Addison presented the philosophical and literary ideas of his time to a wide audience in an easy, graceful style. In Sir Roger de Coverley, the Tory country squire, Addison created one of the great English comic characters. As well as essays, Addison wrote poetry, political journalism, and a tragedy, 'Cato' , which was one of the most popular plays of its day. Like his fellow Lichfeldians, Johnson and Garrick, Addison is buried in Westminster Abbey.

Name: Joseph Addison Birth Date: May 1, 1672 Death Date: June 17, 1719 Place of Birth: Milston, Wiltshire, England Nationality: English Gender: Male Occupations: politician, essayist, writer Joseph Addison Main Biography The English essayist and politician Joseph Addison (1672-1719) founded the "Spectator" periodical with Sir Richard Steele. Joseph Addison was born on May 1, 1672, the son of the rector of Milston, Wiltshire. He was educated at the Charterhouse, an important boarding school, and then at Oxford, where he received a bachelor's degree in 1691. Addison used poetry to further his political ambitions; his earliest poems include flattering references to influential men. In 1699 Addison was rewarded with a grant of money which allowed him to make the grand tour, a series of visits to the main European capitals, which was a standard part of the education of the 18th-century gentleman. One record of his travels is his long poem Letter from Italy In 1703 Addison returned to England to find that the Whigs, the party with which he had allied himself, were out of power. But his poem on the Battle of Blenheim won him an appointment as commissioner of appeal in excise. Addison continue.....

    Joseph Addison quotes
English essayist, poet, and dramatist, 1672-1719
There is nothing which we receive with so much reluctance as advice. He who would pass his declining years with honor and comfort, should, when young, consider that he may one day become old, and remember when he is old, that he has once been young. Great souls by instinct to each other turn, demand alliance, and in friendship burn. Eternity! thou pleasing, dreadful thought. Cheerfulness is the best promoter of health, and is as friendly to the mind as to the body. Better to die ten thousand deaths than wound my honor. Admiration is a very short-lived passion that immediately decays upon growing familiar with its object, unless it be still fed with fresh discoveries, and kept alive by a perpetual succession of miracles rising into view. A woman seldom asks advice before she has bought her wedding clothes. Admiration is a very short-lived passion, that immediately decays upon growing familiar with its object. Sweet are the slumbers of the virtuous man.

It is possible this defect of imagination [the inability to get one's brain around the very, very large or the very, very tiny] may not be in the soul itself but as it acts in conjunction with the body. Perhaps there may not be room in the brain for such a variety of impression, or the animal spirits may be incapable of figuring them in such a manner as is necessary to excite so very large or minute ideas. However it be, we may well suppose that beings of a higher nature very much excel us in this respect, as it is probable the soul of man will be infinitely more perfect hereafter in this faculty-as well as in all the rest-insomuch that perhaps the imagination will be able to keep pace with understanding and to form in itself distinct ideas of all the different modes and quantities of space.

    Addison, Joseph (1672-1719)
A good conscience is to the soul what health is to the body; it preserves constant ease and serenity within us; and more than countervails all the calamities and afflictions which can befall us from without. Books are the legacies that a great genius leaves to mankind, which are delivered down from generation to generation as presents to the posterity of those who are yet unborn. Cheerfulness keeps up a kind of daylight in the mind, and fills it with a steady and perpetual serenity. Education is a companion which no misfortune can depress, no crime can destroy, no enemy can alienate,no despotism can enslave. At home, a friend, abroad, an introduction, in solitude a solace and in society an ornament. It chastens vice, it guides virtue, it gives at once grace and government to genius. Without it, what is man? A splendid slave, a reasoning savage. For it is the chief concern of wise men to retrench the evils of life by the reasonings of philosophy; it is the employment of fools to multiply them by the sentiments of superstition.
