At Charterhouse he was to make a friend of Richard Steele, who was later to become the founder of The tatler Addison set his sights on a diplomatic career and travelled widely. He secured the post of Commissioner of Excise in 1705 through his political contacts and by especially writing a poem, The campaign (1704), which celebrated the triumph of the Battle of Blenheim. Three years later he became a Member of Parliament, a position he was to retain for the rest of his life. From 1713 he lived at Bilton Hall, in the village of Bilton , then just outside Rugby. Through his many political and literary acquaintances he published a range of his work in various periodicals including The tatler The spectator and The guardian . His blank-verse tragedy Cato was produced in 1713 and was a great success through its pertinent political comment. It was described as "rather a poem in dialogue than a drama" by

The hours of a wise man are lengthened by his ideas. "Admiration is a very short-lived passion that immediately decays upon growing familiar with its object, unless it be still fed with fresh discoveries, and kept alive by a perpetual succession of miracles rising into view." "Authors have established it as a kind of rule, that a man ought to be dull sometimes; as the most severe reader makes allowances for many rests and nodding-places in a voluminous writer." Essays From Addison edited by J H Fowler I. Life
[of Joseph Addison portrait Joseph Addison son of the Rev. Lancelot Addison, dean of Lichfield, was born on May 1st, 1672, at Milston, Wiltshire. He was educated at Lichfield, and afterwards at Charterhouse, where Steele, whose name was in later years to be associated so closely with his, was a younger schoolfellow. Steele visited him at Lichfleld, and has commemorated the charm of his home circle in the Tatler (No. 25). " The boys behaved themselves very early with a manly friendship ; and their sister, instead of the gross familiarities and impertinent freedoms in behaviour usual in other houses, was always treated by them with as much complaisance as any other young lady of their acquaintance. It was an unspeakable pleasure to visit or sit at a meal in that family. I have often seen the old man's heart flow at his eyes with joy upon occasions which would appear indifferent to such as were strangers to the turn of his mind ; but a very slight accident, wherein he saw his children's good-will to one another, created in him the godlike pleasure of loving them because they loved each other." In 1687 Addison went to Oxford. At first he was a commoner of Queen's College, but he was given a demyship (i.e. scholarship) at Magdalen for his classical attainments, and in due course proceeded to a fellowship. He won a reputation which extended beyond Oxford for his Latin verses.

Addison, Joseph
Encyclopedia Article Addison, Joseph (1672-1719), English essayist, poet, and statesman, whose work, particularly in the periodicals The Tatler and The Spectator, strongly influenced 18th-century English taste and opinion. Addison was born on May 1, 1672, in Milston, Wiltshire, and educated at the University of Oxford, where he distinguished himself as a classical scholar. In 1699 he was granted a government pension, which he used for travel through Europe. In 1704, about a year after his return to England, Addison was commissioned by the government to write a poem celebrating the British victory that same year at the Battle of Blenheim, in the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714). His composition, “The Campaign” (1705), was such an aid to the Whig Party, which was then seeking control of the British government, that his position in both politics and letters was firmly established. From 1708 to 1710 Addison served in the British Parliament as a Whig. In 1709 he became a contributor to

He was a student at the Charter House, which he left in 1687, to enter Queen's College, Oxford. After two years he was transferred to Magdalen, where he was graduated in 1693. He distinguished himself while at college for his shyness and his scholarship. In the year of his graduation he published his Account of the Greatest English Poets. Through Dryden The Campaign , he was made Under Secretary of State. Meantime he was engaged in literary work, and in 1706 he produced an unsuccessful opera, Rosamond . Two years later Addison was deprived of his position as Under-Secretary, but was offered a Secretaryship in Ireland under the Lord Lieutenant. In 1711 he lost the post owing to a change of the Ministry. Steele's Tatler papers began to appear in 1709, and Addison's first contribution dates from the same year. Cato: A Tragedy
    Author Info: Joseph Addison
My voice is still for war.
Gods! can a Roman senate long debate
Which of the two to choose, slavery or death?
-Cato , Act ii, Scene 1 I've long been of a mind that the most interesting question in regard to Shakespeare's Julius Caesar is the one they never asked us in class : was it right to kill him? As always in Shakespeare, it's possible to read the play in several ways, but the final verdict seems to be that the assassins were not justified, not least because in replacing one tyranny they unleashed a worse. This messagethe wisdom of erring on the side of stabilitywould have been particularly resonant in Shakespeare's own day, when religious conflicts, foreign invasion, and wars of dynastic succession were still recent memories and/or active concerns. Brutus, then, though in some ways a tragic hero, is ultimately too passive a character to really command our loyalty and affection. And if Caesar and Marc Anthony don't fare much better, we are left to conclude that things would have been better had the established order, even an imperfect order, been allowed to endure. Spring ahead just a few decades from Shakespeare's time though, and the moral of the story becomes problematic. By the middle of the 17th Century, we are entered upon the Age of Revolutions in the English-Speaking World, and intellectual justification must be found for the series of events that would see Protestants and Parliaments and Colonists overthrow and even execute their kings. Little wonder then that Joseph Addison's terrific, but largely forgotten, play
