General Introduction
By Kenneth M. Stampp, Professor Emeritus, University of California at Berkeley Planters ambitious to augment their wealth, together with their black slaves, were an important driving force in the economic and political development of new territories and states in the Southwest. Their commodities accounted for more than half the nation's exports, and the plantations themselves were important markets for the products of northern industry. In short, they played a crucial role in the development of a national market economy. The plantations of the Old South, the white families who owned, operated, and lived on them, and the blacks who toiled on them as slaves for more than two centuries have been the subjects of numerous historical studies since the pioneering work of Ulrich B. Phillips in the early twentieth century. The literature, highly controversial, has focused on questions such as the evolution and nature of the planter class and its role in shaping the white South's economy, culture, and values; the conditions experienced by American blacks in slavery; the impact of the "peculiar institution" on their personalities and the degree to which a distinct Afro-American culture developed among them; and, finally, the sources of the tension between the proslavery interests of the South and the "free labor" interests of the North that culminated in secession and civil war.

Introduction

Alphabetical List

Chronological Index
INTRODUCTION This guide describes manuscript collections documenting African American history in the Louisiana and Lower Mississippi Valley Collections at LSU. It includes the papers of African Americans and their families; oral histories done with African Americans; and other collections that document African American history in one way or another. In the early period, these collections include documentation of slavery, the slave trade, abolitionism, and apologies for slavery. In the modern period, they include collections that document issues like civil rights, integration, and race relations. Indeed, the experience of African Americans before and during the Civil War is often documented through the papers of othersamong them, planters who bought and sold them as slaves and Union soldiers who commented upon them in letters and diaries. LSU has such resources in abundance. Papers of early African Americans themselves are more difficult to find. But Louisiana and the lower Mississippi Valley had a relatively large population of free persons of color, some of whom did leave papers. They worked as artisans in cities like New Orleans or Natchez, or were planters and even slaveholders themselves. LSU's collections of the papers of free persons of color include the papers of William Johnson of Natchez, now famed as a diarist and commentator on Southern mores.

  • Background note Administrative information
Scope and content The Scientists Collection is a miscellaneous assemblage of individual letters and small groups of correspondence of American and European scientists from the 17th through 20th centuries. The disciplines represented are varied, with significant depth in natural history, conchology, geology, and astronomy, and there are separate series for physicists (58 items, relating especially to Max Planck), and American-Russian scientific exchange prior to the Russian Revolution (46 items). The circle of Darwin and, more generally, of mid-19th century British natural historians, is also well represented in the Scientists Collection. Included in the collection are valuable letters from John Edward Gray, William Whewell, John Lubbock, and John Stevens Henslow, and there is a small set of letters from Robert Chambers, as well as a fascinating exchange between the publisher John Murray and the naturalist, Henry W. Bates, concerning publication of Bates'

INDEX This is an index of names and places presented throughout this book. Since there is much narrative included, this index attempts to organize the information in a way that is hopefully more beneficial to the reader. It includes names that are part of the “genealogy proper” as well as names within the narrative throughout the book that are not necessarily part of the genealogy or the lineages. Names in the genealogy proper can be discerned throughout the index as those with surnames in all-capitals and they usually include birth-death notations if available. The places and names in normal format are those included in the narrative of the book. There are some names that appear in both and are listed as such.

Pennsylvania's Capitols and Leaders
"Of all the many places I have seen in the world, I remember not one better seated," wrote William Penn (1644-1718), after his first visit to Pennsylvania in 1682. 29 million acres were given to Penn by King Charles II of England in 1681. As Pennsylvania's proprietor, Penn intended to bestow religious and political freedom, perhaps plant "the seed of a nation." The executive and judicial branches of government would be under Penn and his family's jurisdiction, and the people would have their own Legislature. Initially all free men would be legislators in a town-hall fashion. When advisers warned against this, Penn formulated a one-house General Assembly. Forty-two members attended its first meeting in a small structure at Upland, near Chester. In following years, the Assembly met in Philadelphia's Town Hall, various meeting houses, or occasionally in private homes. When Penn departed Pennsylvania in 1701, the House of Representatives was the most powerful and independent legislative body in America, little inclined to be submissive to Penn or his British governors. In the early 1700s, the Assembly began plans for its own State House located in Philadelphia. The House purchased the land in 1729 from its Speaker, the great lawyer Andrew Hamilton, who then designed what today is revered as Independence Hall. Chief Clerk Benjamin Franklin oversaw its construction, one of his innumerable accomplishments in his 60 years of public service.
