, sixth president of the United States, diplomat, congressman, U.S. senator, and secretary of state. As the eldest and most gifted son of John Adams, second president of the United States, Adams enjoyed many opportunities that prepared him for later public service. In 1802 Adams was elected a U.S. senator from Massachusetts as a Federalist, but he was too independent of mind to follow a regular party line. During the international tensions that arose from the Napoleonic Wars, he supported the policies of the Jefferson administration. His stand, contrary to the position of his party, resulted in his replacement as senator. He resigned, however, before the end of his term, only to be appointed to a series of important diplomatic posts. He was one of the American commissioners who arranged for the Treaty of Ghent that ended the War of 1812. As secretary of state, he drafted the Monroe Doctrine and acquired Florida from Spain for the United States. He was the New England candidate for the presidency in 1824, but neither he nor any of the other candidates commanded the electoral majority the Constitution required. Therefore the election was decided by the House of Representatives, each state casting one vote. Henry Clay threw his support to Adams, who was then elected over Andrew Jackson. When Adams made Clay his secretary of state, the disapproving Jacksonians accused the president of entering into "a corrupt bargain" with Clay. From then until the end of his administration, Adams was the target of highly charged partisan abuse.

, sixth president of the United States . Born to John Adams and Abigail Adams in Braintree, Massachusetts, Adams was immersed in politics at an early age. As a teenager, he traveled in Europe with his diplomat father and attended European schools. After graduating from Harvard, he served as minister to the Netherlands, Prussia, Russia, and Great Britain. He was chosen by the Federalists to fill a vacant U.S. Senate seat, but his failure to vote consistently along party lines and his opposition to the Embargo Act resulted in his replacement. Adams was one of the American commissioners who negotiated the Treaty of Ghent with the British, ending the War of 1812. As secretary of state under James Monroe , Adams made an agreement with Great Britain for joint occupation of the Oregon Territory, negotiated the Adams-Onís Treaty , resulting in the acquisition of Florida from Spain, and helped develop the Monroe Doctrine In 1824 Adams became the only son of a president to be elected president himself. His administration was marked by controversy from the beginning. The

John Quincy Adams
John Quincy Adams (1767-1848) spent most of his youth and adult life in public service to the United States, as senator, diplomat, secretary of state, president, and congressman. He made his greatest contribution to his country after his presidency, while serving in the United States House of Representatives as a staunch opponent of slavery and expansionist war. The second of John and Abigail Adams's five children, Johnny was born in the North Precinct of Braintree, Massachusetts (later Quincy). His parents' home in Quincy remained his own home throughout his life, though he was often away for extended periods in Europe and Washington. He was strongly influenced by his fiercely dedicated and brilliant parents. At home, issues of government, politics, world affairs, literature, religion and morality were all considered immediate and pressing. "JQA," as he began early to identify himself, accompanied and assisted his father on diplomatic trips to Europe, 1778-85, serving, despite his youth, as secretary to Francis Dana and his father in negotiations with foreign countries. Abroad Johnny developed a love for the Greek and Roman classics. On returning to America, he was granted admission to Harvard College with advanced standing, based on his studies at the University of Leyden. Following graduation in 1787, Adams studied and briefly practiced law, but found it boring and depressing. Looking elsewhere for fulfillment, he was developing a reputation as an orator and as a newspaper essayist, author of "Letters of Publicola," a response to

John Quincy Adams
Sixth President (1825-1829)
John Quincy Adams's tenure as James Monroe's secretary of state ranks among the most productive in the history of that office. But his often abrupt and tactless ways were ill-suited for the presidency, and when his nationalistic vision for federally sponsored development of America's potentials met with hostility in Congress, he was incapable of promoting accommodation. As a result, the accomplishments of his administration were meager indeed. At the end of his presidency, Adams declared, "the sun of my political life sets in deepest gloom." In fact, his sun was not even close to setting. Elected to the House of Representatives in 1830, he served there until his death. By then, he had been dubbed "Old Man Eloquent," and in his prolonged and successful struggle defending the antislavery movement's right to petition Congress, he had gained a circle of admirers that extended well beyond his Massachusetts constituency. When Adams sat for this portrait, he doubted that artist George Caleb Bingham could produce "a strong likeness." But Bingham did just that, and the portrait's sharp-edged vitality seems to echo Ralph Waldo Emerson's comment that the aging Adams was "like one of those old cardinals, who as quick as he is chosen Pope, throws away his crutches and his crookedness, and is as straight as a boy."
