John Quincy Adams was the son of President John Adams , served as U.S. Senator from Massachusetts and was Secretary of State under President Monroe . In the presidential election of 1824, no one candidate received a majority of electoral votes and the election was decided in Adams' favor by Congress. The election of 1828 was the first in which the candidates were chosen by state legislatures instead of congressional caucuses, making the popular vote more of a factor. Adams lost by a wide margin to the Democrat from the south, Andrew Jackson . Although he served only one term as president, in 1830 Adams was elected to the House of Representatives, where he served for the remaining 17 years of his life. Adams was the sixth president.

  • Born: 11 November 1744 Birthplace: Weymouth, Massachusetts Died: 28 October 1818 (typhoid fever) Best Known As: Wife of President John Adams
Name at birth: Abigail Smith Abigail Adams was the wife of the 2nd U.S. president, John Adams , and the mother of the 6th U.S. president, John Quincy Adams . Abigail was descended on her mother's side from the Quincys, a prominent New England family. She married John Adams, then a lawyer, in 1764, and they spent much of their early life apart as John Adams travelled as a circuit judge and then became a key player in the American Revolution. Their fond, newsy and philosophical letters to one another during these absences have become famous both as evidence of a deep love affair and as a source of information about the Revolutionary era. Abigail lived briefly in Paris and London as John Adams served as U.S. ambassador to France and England, and she became a friend to First Lady Martha Washington when John Adams became the country's first vice-president under George Washington . John Adams became president in 1797, and after his single term ended in 1801 he and Abigail retired to their home in Quincy, Massachusetts. Abigail Adams died of typhoid fever in 1818; seven years later, in 1825, her son John Quincy became president.

John Quincy Adams
John Quincy Adams was born in Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts, the son of John and Abigail Adams. He spent much of his youth in Europe where his father served on a variety of diplomatic missions. John Junior's intellectual abilities were recognized early in life and at the age of 15 he was named the secretary to the U.S. minister in Russia. He returned to America and graduated from Harvard College in 1788. He studied law and established his own practice in 1791. Adams began a distinguished diplomatic career by serving the Federalist presidents as the minister to the Netherlands and Prussia in the 1790s. In 1802, he was elected to the Massachusetts assembly, but left the following year to take a U.S. Senate seat. Elected originally as a Federalist, Adams broke with the party when he supported JeffersonÂ’s Embargo of 1807. He went on to serve the Madison and Monroe administrations on a series of diplomatic assignments: minister to Russia from 1809 to 1814, peace negotiator at Ghent during the War of 1812 , and minister to Great Britain from 1815 to 1817.
