Henry Adams (1838-1918)
Born into the prominent Adams family of presidents and historians, Henry Adams was himself a historian and philosopher. In his autobiography, The Education of Henry Adams , he writes about himself with a kind of distant irony in the third person, suggesting that he is only a small part of larger forces at work in the world. It is in the chapter entitled "Failure," about his own early attempts to teach, that he wrote, "A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influences stops."

, historian and writer. As a fourth-generation member of one of America's most distinguished families, Henry Adams was born into history, which became a determining influence on his long but undramatic life. Childhood visits to grandfather John Quincy Adams in the White House and family tales of great-grandparents John and Abigail Adams first served to personalize the facts and dates he studied at school. During the Civil War, he witnessed history in the making as secretary to his father, Charles Francis Adams, minister to the Court of St. James. Rather than becoming a maker of history, however, Henry, a master of English prose, chose to write about it. His classic account of self, The Education of Henry Adams (privately printed, 1907; published, 1918), today remains his most popular work; yet his finely crafted letters, essays, and especially Mont-Saint-Michel and Chartres (privately printed, 1904; published, 1913) retain a specialized appeal, as, to a lesser degree, do his novels

At his birth Henry Brooks Adams, the grandson and great-grandson of American presidents, entered a privileged world. Along with his political name he also inherited a special responsibility: to bear witness, through writing, to the complexity of life. Today Adams owes his popular reputation to a single record of that kind, The Education of Henry Adams, which won a Pulitzer Prize in 1919. Yet over a long and productive career as a writer, he also produced a substantial body of essays, biographies, novels, letters, and histories, which largely reward our attention.
Adams's earliest publications, dating from his undergraduate years at Harvard University, from 1854 to 1858, pointed directions for his later work. As he wrote of men, architecture, and books, the young Adams testified to the high seriousness of his concern for human experience as a field of lifelong investigation. Yet he knew his preparation to be incomplete. After graduation and a tour of Europe first he settled in Germany, where he mastered German historical method, the most rigorous type of scholarship available at the time. Then, at the behest of his father, Charles Francis Adams, elected to Congress in 1860, Henry moved to Washington to serve as a private secretary (and as a secret correspondent for the

This link leads to artifacts, teaching tips and discussion questions for this author. From his early childhood on, Henry Adams was acutely aware of his heritage as part of the remarkable political dynasty of the Adams family. Both his great-grandfather and his grandfather had served as President of the United States, and his father, Charles Francis Adams, was a congressman and a diplomat. But while Henry Adams maintained a lively interest in politics and moved in powerful social circles in Washington, D.C., all his life, he found his true calling and lasting fameas a writer and a historian. Noted in his own time for his essays, biographies, novels, and histories, today Adams owes his reputation primarily to The Education of Henry Adams , his unique autobiographical study of the forces that shaped his own life and nineteenth-century America more generally.

One friend in a lifetime is much, two are many, three are hardly possible. Friendship needs a certain parallelism of life, a community of thought, a rivalry of aim. Adams, Henry Brooks Friends and Friendship Absolute liberty is absence of restraint; responsibility is restraint; therefore, the ideally free individual is responsible to himself. Adams, Henry Brooks Liberty A friend in power is a friend lost. Adams, Henry Brooks Power The proper study of mankind is woman.
