Flatland:
A Romance of Many Dimensions
Edwin Abbott Abbott
Shopping Cart Reviews Over a hundred years ago, Edwin Abbott Abbott wrote a mathematical adventure set in a two-dimensional plane world, populated by a hierarchical society of regular geometrical figures-who think and speak and have all too human emotions. Since then Flatland has fascinated generations of readers, becoming a perennial science-fiction favorite. By imagining the contact of beings from different dimensions, the author fully exploited the power of the analogy between the limitations of humans and those of his two-dimensional characters. A first-rate fictional guide to the concept of multiple dimensions of space, the book will also appeal to those who are interested in computer graphics. This field, which literally makes higher dimensions seeable, has aroused a new interest in visualization. We can now manipulate objects in four dimensions and observe their three-dimensional slices tumbling on the computer screen. But how do we interpret these images? In his introduction, Thomas Banchoff points out that there is no better way to begin exploring the problem of understanding higher-dimensional slicing phenomena than reading this classic novel of the Victorian era. The author of more than fifty books on classics, theology, history, and Shakespeare

    A ROMANCE OF MANY DIMENSIONS.
With Illustrations by the Author A Square.
    New and Revised Edition
pp. xvi, 102. Square 8vo. 22 cm. Uncut. Original limp card boards, covered in printed vellumized paper. An usually well preserved copy, of a notoriously fragile book. Published in the same year as the first edition. Edwin A. Abbott (1838-1926) was born in London, the son of the Headmaster of the Philological School, Marylebone. After a successful career at St. John's College, Cambridge, he married and became a minister. In 1864 he was elected Head Master of the City of London School, and served brilliantly for twenty-five years. It was due to his influence, that the study of great English Literature became an integral part of educational programs. He was one of the greatest teachers of his era. He became well known as a Bacon scholar, and occasionally became embroiled in the Shakespeare-Bacon controversy. It is interesting to note that the fine article on Abbott in the DNB does not even mention 'Flatland' - perhaps because it was both pseudonymous and most unusual, and thus somewhat inconvenient to associate with its author.
Not incidentally, 'Flatland' is also full of humorous satires on class, bureaucracy, and society in Victorian England. In recent years, Abbott's witty view of class conflict and women's roles in society have gotten much attention - especially interesting are his descriptions of women's language versus men's language.

He was educated at the City of London school and at St. John's College, Cambridge, where he took the highest honours in classics, mathematics and theology, and became fellow of his college.
