Scope and content note
Papers 9.9 metres Restricted in part The collection also reflects his literary, educational, social, religious and benevolent interests. Material is included from his association with the Universities of Sydney and Adelaide and the South Australian State Library. Biographical note
Josiah Henry Symon, son of James and Elizabeth Symon, was born in Wick, Scotland, on 27th September, 1846. He received his early education at Stirling High School and at Moray Training College, Edinburgh. In March 1881 he was appointed Attorney-General in South Australia's short-lived Morgan Government. He was elected as the member for Sturt in the House of Assembly a few weeks later and retained that position until 1887, when he unsuccessfully contested the constituency of Victoria. On 8th December, 1881, Symon married Mary Eleanor Cowle. They had five sons and seven daughters, two of whom died in infancy.

Having lifelong interests in research, writing, scrapbooking, genealogy, history, geography, travel, and book collecting, this website reflects my desires to consolidate my work and make my efforts available to others without the disadvantages of publishing books or other printed, nonelectronic media that become obsolete easily, are less convenient or economical, and cannot be updated or corrected.
The majority of my ancestors are of colonial American, white Anglo-Saxon Protestant descent. Ellis Island plays no role in my family heritage, as all of my known ancestors were settled in either Virginia or North Carolina by 1800. I also have earlier colonial roots in Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. In addition to my predominantly British ancestry, I descend from a few French Huguenot, Scottish, German, Dutch, and American Indian lineages. Many of my British ancestors were among the Quaker settlers of North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Virginia, and New Jersey. The combination of this, my descent from some Puritan settlers of New England, Long Island, and Maryland, and my descent from many Anglican, Cavalier, and French Huguenot settlers/ planters of Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina, have enabled me to find connections to numerous Americans.
