    Zoology department
Pairs of species of Darwin's Finches from the Galapagos, showing the wide range of beak shapes that have earned these birds a famous place in evolutionary research The Department of Zoology deals with a wide range of taxonomic groups, ranging from microbes to baleen whales. The 120 staff have a heavy input into many aspects of research on systematics, using a variety of approaches - from traditional morphological studies to the latest molecular techniques. The Department's curators look after the collections, comprising 30 million specimens, 22 million of which are in spirit and stored in the special facilities of the new Darwin Centre.
    The Darwin Centre
The Darwin Centre houses a large proportion of the staff and research laboratories of the Zoology Department, plus all of the Museum's wet collections. It is a new 'state of the art', environmentally friendly scientific facility. The laboratories and collections are separated by a central atrium into which natural light penetrates through an inflated plastic roof. The 22 million specimens comprising these collections are maintained in optimal conditions by the building management system. There is public access to part of building and a programme of tours and presentations.

Welcome to the Department of Zoology at Michigan State University. Zoology is the branch of natural science that deals with the integrative study of animal biology. It is concerned with every level of biological organization from the gene to the biosphere, and with the structure, physiology, behavior, genetics, development, distribution, ecology and evolution of animals in all taxonomic groups. Research and course work within the department cover an enormous array of organisms, as well as diverse investigative techniques. Students in the department obtain a broad education in biology while also specializing in the particular aspects of zoology that interest them most. Training in zoology can help students to prepare for a wide variety of careers including biomedical research, medicine, dentistry, biotechnology, veterinary science, marine biology, wildlife conservation, environmental science, work in zoological parks and aquaria, behavioral biology, and teaching. We invite you to explore this website to find out more about the programs offered through the Department of Zoology. If you would like more information, simply contact the department:

    92. Beachworms (Onuphid) From The Coast Of Eastern Australia - Description Of Projec
Details of the current research on beachworms (Onupidae) being conducted at the University of Queensland (Department of zoology) by Matthew O'Brien for his PhD.
    http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/Residence/5422/project.html
The distribution, abundance and population dynamics of beachworms (Onuphidae) in Queensland/N.S.W. and the impact of commercial and recreational fishing.
    Australonuphis teres
From: Bennett, I "W.J. Dakin's classic study AUSTRALIAN SEASHORES" published by Angus and Robertson ISBN 207 15561 5. The project is being run by the University of Queensland and is funded by the FRDC. I (Matthew O'Brien) am the Ph.D. student running the project and my supervisor is Dr Donald Fielder.
There are four main aims to the project
  • To determine where and why beachworms are located on QLD/N.S.W. surf beaches
  • To determine how the various onuphid species that make up the beachworm fishery are distributed relative to each other and in time
  • To determine if levels of commercial and recreational fishing effort relate to the yield and sustainability of the fishery
  • To make recommendations for the management of the fishery based on an evaluation of catch and effort data and research of the biology of the worms
Some of the results obtained through achieving these aims will be:
    • Knowledge of the major beachworm sites on the Queensland coast and why they occur there
    • Knowledge of how both commercial and recreational fishing impacts on the Queensland beachworm populations and the regenerative capacity of the stock.
