Welcome to the Department of Zoology at Michigan State University. Zoology is the branch of natural science that deals with the integrative study of animal biology. It is concerned with every level of biological organization from the gene to the biosphere, and with the structure, physiology, behavior, genetics, development, distribution, ecology and evolution of animals in all taxonomic groups. Research and course work within the department cover an enormous array of organisms, as well as diverse investigative techniques. Students in the department obtain a broad education in biology while also specializing in the particular aspects of zoology that interest them most. Training in zoology can help students to prepare for a wide variety of careers including biomedical research, medicine, dentistry, biotechnology, veterinary science, marine biology, wildlife conservation, environmental science, work in zoological parks and aquaria, behavioral biology, and teaching. We invite you to explore this website to find out more about the programs offered through the Department of Zoology. If you would like more information, simply contact the department:

http://www.lib.umich.edu/programs/greatlakes/index.html
This web site provides access to materials selected from Fish and Mammal Divisions of the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology and the Fungus Collections of the University of Michigan Herbarium. It is a working prototype of a system that could provide integrated access to all of the Museum Divisions' collections and additional content such as field notes and other supplementary information. It is intended to facilitate access to the collections for the general user as well as the specialist interested in searching across domains. A summary of the project components is available. [go to summary of collections]
There are four searching options:
  • a collection-based interface to the image and database components that allows you to designate any single collection or group of collections to search. [go to collection search]
a map-based interface that searches all databases simultaneously by county. [go to map-based search]
a simple search across all the content in the entire project, including the books, images, and databases. [go to all content search]
a collection-based interface to the full-text fungus monograph component that allows you to designate one or more texts to search.

Branches of biology relevant to zoology
The original branches of zoology established in the late 19th century such as zoo-physics, bionomics and morphography, have largely been subsumed into more broad areas of biology which include studies of mechanisms common to both plants and animals. The biology of animals is covered in several broad areas:
  • The physiology of animals is studied under various fields including anatomy and embryology The common genetic and developmental mechanisms of animals and plants is studied in molecular biology molecular genetics and developmental biology The ecology of animals is covered under behavioral ecology and other fields Evolutionary biology of both animals and plants is considered in the articles on evolution population genetics heredity variation ... biogeography and taxonomy classify and group species via common descent and regional associations.

Additional exercises can be accessed by clicking on the link. A glossary and chapters on supplies and laboratory techniques are also available through this link. Terminology and phylogeny used in these exercises correspond to usage in the textbook by Ruppert, Fox, and Barnes (2004). Hyphenated figure callouts refer to figures in the textbook. Callouts that are not hyphenated refer to figures embedded in the exercise. The glossary includes terms from this textbook as well as the laboratory exercises. Systematics
Mollusca P , Eumollusca, Conchifera, Ganglionura, Rhacopoda, Gastropoda C , Euthyneura, Opisthobranchia sC , Sacoglossa sO , Elysiidae F (Fig 12-125)
    Mollusca P
Mollusca, the second largest metazoan taxon, consists of Aplacophora, Polyplacophora, Monoplacophora, Gastropoda, Cephalopoda, Bivalvia, and Scaphopoda. The typical mollusc has a calcareous shell, muscular foot, head with mouth and sense organs, and a visceral mass containing most of the gut, the heart, gonads, and kidney. Dorsally the body wall is the mantle and a fold of this body wall forms and encloses that all important molluscan chamber, the mantle cavity. The mantle cavity is filled with water or air and in it are located the gill(s), anus, nephridiopore(s) and gonopore(s). The coelom is reduced to small spaces including the pericardial cavity containing the heart and the gonocoel containing the gonad.

    Simple program for displaying phylogenies.
    http://taxonomy.zoology.gla.ac.uk/rod/treeview.html
    TreeView
Tree drawing software for Apple Macintosh and Windows (and now Linux and Unix TreeView is a simple program for displaying phylogenies on Apple Macintosh and Windows PCs. It has the following features:
    • runs on both the Apple Macintosh and Windows Pcs, using almost identical interfaces
    • reads many different tree file formats (including NEXUS, PHYLIP, Hennig86, NONA, MEGA, and ClustalW/X)
    • supports standard the TrueType and Postscript fonts available on Macs and PCs
    • supports native graphics file format (PICT on Macintosh, Windows metafile on Windows) for copying pictures into other applications, and for saving graphics files
    • print preview
    • can print multiple trees per page, and one tree over more than one page
    • has drag-and-drop facility for easy opeing of files
    • Web-based online help
    • tree editor
TreeView provides a simple way to view the contents of a NEXUS, PHYLIP, Hennig86, Clustal, or other format tree file. While PAUP and MacClade have excellent tree printing facilities, there may be times you just want to view the trees without having to load the data set they were generated from. The PHYLIP package contains tree drawing programs which offer a greater variety of trees than TreeView, but are somewhat clumsy to use. The forthcoming PAUP* for Windows does not have a graphical interface, hence TreeView allows you to create publication quality trees from PAUP files, either directly, or by generating graphics files for editing by other programs.
