Size matters: preventing large mammal extinctions
Saving large mammals such as elephants and rhino from extinction could b e made more effective by focusing efforts on individual species as well as their habitats. Scientists at IoZ and Imperial College London have identified fundamental new approaches to improve the success of large mammal conservation. Published in the journal Science the largest study of its kind analyses key factors linked to the extinction of mammals.

30. Zoos
A brief overview of zoological practices from 4500 B.C. to the 20th century.
http://www.wta.org.za/info/history/zoos.htm
History of Zoology
Zoo also called Zoological Garden, or Zoological Park, a place where wild animals and, in some instances, domesticated animals are exhibited in captivity. In such an establishment animals can generally be given more intensive care than is possible in nature reserves or sanctuaries. It is not exactly known when the earliest zoos were established, but it is possible that they were associated with the first attempts at animal domestication.
4500 – 2500 BC
Pigeons were kept in captivity as early as 4500 BC in what is now Iraq, and 2,000 years later elephants were semi-domesticated in India. The earliest known examples of zoo management date back to the ancient Egyptians who began keeping wild animals. Antelopes, including the addax, ibex, oryx, and gazelle, are depicted wearing collars on Egyptian tomb pictures at Saqqara, dating from 2500 BC.
1500 BC
The pharaohs of later periods such as Tuthmosis III (1501-1447 BC) imported many animals to Egypt. Queen Hatshephut, his stepmother, organised expeditions to capture wild animals as far afield as Somalia. Those expeditions brought back monkeys, leopards, cheetahs, various birds, large cattle and even giraffe.
1000 BC
In China, the Empress Tanki, who probably lived about 1150 BC, built a great marble "house of deer"; and Wen Wang, who apparently reigned just before 1000 BC, established a zoo of 1,500 acres in extent, which he named the Ling-Yu, or Garden of Intelligence.

Founded in 1908 by a gift to the University of California from Miss Annie Montague Alexander, the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology is a center for research on, conservation of, and education in terrestrial vertebrates. Our collections of amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals are among the largest in the United States and our University setting has made the Museum one of the premier centers for the education of undergraduate and graduate students in vertebrate biology. Under the successive leadership of eminent naturalists and evolutionary biologists, starting with Joseph Grinnell, the Museum’s program has focused continually on evolutionary biology from the perspective of ecology, behavior, morphology, population biology, and genetics. Because the Museum was founded with the philosophy that organisms should be studied in relationship to their natural environments, the specimen collections are supplemented by extensive field notes, maps, photographs, and correspondence which enhances their value to researchers. The Museum’s collections thus grew as a direct, material manifestation of the activities of its students and staff, academic and nonacademic. Field activities of those associated with the Museum over the decades have extended to the far-flung corners of the globe, but have primarily centered in western North America, Mexico and Central America, western South America, central Asia, and east Africa. The collections reflect this geographic scale.

UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN
Welcome to UCT's Department of Zoology on line! The Zoology Department at UCT is the oldest such university department in South Africa, having been founded in 1903, and is situated in a modern building on the upper campus. The department houses 22 academic, 14 technical and support and 20 research staff. In addition there are 4 post doctoral research students, more than 80 masters and doctoral candidates, 15 honours students and some 570 undergraduates. ( A comprehensive orientation guide intended to assist new staff, students and visiting scientists to find their way around the department can be found here The Zoology Department incorporates the Marine Biology Research Institute (MBRI), the Percy FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology (PFIAO), the Freshwater Research Unit (FRU) and groups involved in physiological, biochemical, ecological and ethological research. It has the largest postgraduate school, and is the most productive department in terms of publication output, in the University. Scientists in the MBRI work on the ecology and physiology of rocky and sandy shore organisms, fisheries and mariculture issues, marine parasitology, pollution, invertebrate systematics and the biology of the Benguela upwelling system. The PFIAO is the foremost centre of ornithological research on the African continent and has a strong programme in conservation biology. Research in the FRU centres on the ecology of freshwater ecosystems and particularly the management of river systems.

We have also - for the first time - included links to a commercial sponsor. Whilst no-one involved in the CFZ management team is paid for their efforts, running an organisation of this size is increasingly expensive. Sadly, last year - through no fault of our own - we lost two of our main funding sources and are currently facing the worst cash crisis that we have ever had. Every dollar and every pound donated goes straight into CFZ Funds, and we would ask for your generosity.
