National Research Centre for Environmental Toxicology (EnTox) The National Research Centre for Environmental Toxicology - EnTox, is a centre of excellence that addresses the need for national and international research into human environmental toxicology. Within a framework of risk assessment, the health effects of exposure of biological systems and humans to environmental contaminants are studied. Risk assessment involves the identification of potential hazards and synthesis of diverse data to determine the plausibility and magnitude of risks posed by environmental agents. Major elements of research activity in EnTox are measuring potential and real exposure to environmental toxicants, and measuring the effect or dose-response to toxicants. The major research themes of EnTox are: Exposure and effect of; Metals and Metalloids Natural Toxins Anthropogenic Pollutants EnTox's strengths focus on undertaking multidisciplinary research directed at national and international priority environment health issues arising from exposure to environmental substances. The key areas of environmental health issues arise from exposure to toxins in water, air, food, and soil. Environmental Health Risk Assessment (EHRA) Workshop 2005 - 18th - 22nd July 2005

THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF HYGIENE, TOXICOLOGY AND OCCUPATIONAL PATHOLOGY, Volgograd
The Research Institute of Hygiene, Toxicology and Occupational Pathology was founded in Volgograd in 1971. An integrated approach taking into account theoretical and practical aspects of far-ranging problems to be studied in hygiene, toxicology and occupational pathology laid a foundation around which the RIHTOP was organized and structurally aimed at performing researches. With a system of laboratory divisions and occupational disease clinic at its disposal, the RIHTOP is able to attack a wide range of problems it is set to, combining direct studies on industrial and environmental locations and the works under experimental and clinical conditions.

Research
We study the effects of environmental pollutants on developing organisms. The main focus of the laboratory is on the effects of pollutants on the early embryo, in general, with an additional emphasis on the effects of pollutants on the nervous system throughout the embryonic period. Since we are studying environmentally relevant chemicals, we are interested in both animals exposed in the wild, generally to a mixture of environmental pollutants, and laboratory models exposed under controlled laboratory conditions in order to verify the field results and in order to better characterize the underlying mechanisms.
Major Research Areas
  • Evaluation of the effects of dioxins (and other environmentally-related pollutants) on early embryonic avian development. These projects entail both general microscopic evaluation and analysis as well as immunohistochemical and histochemical techniques to evaluate biochemical and/or molecular changes induced by dioxin exposure.
  • Evaluation of the effects of dioxins (and related chemicals) on avian behavior (in laboratory conditions). This project entails exposing avian embryos to dioxins throughout embryonic development and analyzing behavioral changes in the hatchlings. A range of behavioral techniques are used to assess a range of potentially effected behaviors.
