Here is more from the presumably infallible tome: ... 1599 he [Clement VIII] made him Cardinal-Priest.. Bellarmine did not live to deal with the later and more serious stage of the Galileo case, but in 1615 he took part in its earlier stage...it became Bellarmine's official duty to signify the condemnation to Galileo, .. The good book fails to mention Giordano Bruno and is eminently weasel-wordish about RB's old buddy Galileo.

Biological feedback
Beyond a certain level of complexity, the correct operation of systems (natural as well as artificial) requires that the machinery which produces a crucial element be 'informed' of the level of this element and takes this level into account to regulate the rate of production. This is realized by feedback loops . For example, let a, b, c be gene products ; if the level of a influences the rate of synthesis of b, whose level influences the rate of synthesis of c, whose level in turn influences the rate of synthesis of a, the three elements form a feedback loop. The level of each element of the loop influences its own rate of synthesis some time later. There are only two types of feedback loops according to the parity of the number of negative elements. If this number is even, one deals with a

Description
The Journal of Theoretical Biology is the leading forum for theoretical papers that give insight into biological processes. It covers a very wide range of topics and is of interest to biologists in many areas of research. Many of the papers make use of mathematics, and an effort is made to make the papers intelligible to biologists as a whole. Experimental material bearing on theory is acceptable. Comment on theoretical issues or on papers published in the journal is welcomed in the form of Letters to the Editors.
Research Areas Include:
ISSN: 0022-5193
Imprint: ACADEMIC PRESS
Commenced publication in 1961
Subscription for the year 2006, Volumes 238-243, 24 issues

Diese Seite auf Deutsch The European Communications of Mathematical and Theoretical Biology (ECMTB) constitute a public organ of communication of the European Society of Mathematical and Theoretical Biology (ESMTB) for exchanging information and ideas. The newest electronic versions of ECMTB are freely accessible on the net for everyone interested. Download current and previous issues of the ECMTB! ECMTB presents news, information and reports on all topics which may be of interest to scientists working in the fields of mathematical biology, theoretical biology, biophysics, and bioinformatics. ECMTB conveys news of the European Society for Mathematical and Theoretical Biology, and it features work group presentations, reports on past events (like conferences, workshops, meetings), papers on the history of theoretical biology, an elaborate list of new books and book reviews, and short announcements of coming events. Former issues of ECMTB also contained scientific papers, which used to be refereed, however, from issue 4, october 02, on no further scientific contributions are published. Instead, from 2003 on the Journal of Mathematical Biology serves as the official journal of the Society (ESMTB) and has two pages in each issue (8 times per yearly volume) reserved for printing brief information or contributions from Society members. In addition, the Communications (ECMTB) continues to appear and mainly publishes longer contributions and long term informations, requests and presentations by all biomathematicians or theoretical biologists who are interested to send in their text. Soon the Board of the Society (ESMTB) will shape an Editorial Committee responsible for all these publications.

The final volume in this series is in preparation familiar? Over-complex business organization stifles growth and responsiveness. Evolution plus the science of complex systems may help. Resilience and responsiveness can be improved through 'decomplexing' an organization to its boundary between stodgy stability and decentralized free-wheeling (between order and chaos ). Self-organization can be exploited to keep it there. And a new development - Highly Optimized Tolerance - can be employed to achieve greater robustness or even more responsiveness - take your pick!

Michael Lachmann The main interests of the group is understanding evolutionary phenomena associated with evolutionary transitions of the selected units. Examples for such transitions include the evolution of multicellularity, the evolution of eusocial groups, such as ant and wasp colonies, the evolution of human culture, and the origin of Darwinian selection. Such transitions raise very interesting evolutionary questions, and we try to address sme of them. Currently, we are working on the following directions: Evolution of differentiation Multicellular organisms follow a developmental plan leading them from the fertilized egg to an adult organism. Different cells in the adult can perform different functions, and express different genes. These are the different cell types that are part of the various tissues of the multicellular organism. Some of the questions that interst us are:
How does differentiation evolve?

THEORETICAL BIOLOGY
Thermodynamics of Aging G.P.Gladyshev Semenov Institute of Chemical Physics, Russian Academy of Sciences, ul. Kosygina, 4, Moscow, 117977 Russia Received October 14, 1997 Abstract
THERMODYNAMIC THEORY OF AGING
There are many theories of aging, most of which deal with the process mechanism. These theories concentrate on the kinetics (dynamics) of the phenomenon. As a rule, each of them focuses on changes in organisms that accompany aging. It is clear that, in general, these changes cannot be considered the cause (driving force) of aging. These kinetic theories have been extensively discussed (Advances ..., 1996; Klatz and Goldman, 1996; The Science ..., 1996; The Yearbook ..., 1997). Another group of theories deals with the kinetic-thermodynamic aspects of ontogenesis. Most of these theories use models that consider the changes in entropy production during aging (Lee and Hershey, 1990), which are based on the works of I.Prigogine and his coworkers. These theories consider the rates of heat production by living beings. However, in this case, the heat effects characterize the intensity of biochemical processes and are only indirectly related to the alteration (aging) of the proper structure of the biological system. One should also bear in mind that changes in the entropy of an open system are, of course, related to not only the heat effects of the processes, but also to exchange of matter and energy with the environment, which makes it difficult to calculate the changes in thermodynamic functions of the systems (Denbigh, 1989).

It must be emphasised that theoretical biology differs from theoretical physics in that (i) it emphasises the rational treatment of diversity and complexity; (ii) it tries to combine holistic ideas with the modelling approach; and (iii) the number of relevant facts that must be taken into account is very large. Its main role can be summarized in the words of the Nobel laureate Sir Peter Medawar: "No new principle will declare itself from beneath a heap of facts." (A good recent example of this is the need to interpret the results to be expected from the Human Genome Project.) It is timely to distil from the avalanche of observations whatever general principles can be discerned. Introduction UNDER CONSTRUCTION TOP Books

There are regular train and bus connections to and from Prague, and several trains a day to and from Austria (Linz, Gmünd). The main bus and train stations in Ceske Budejovice are placed close together, with stops of most city buses inbetween. The academic campus, including several other institutes and university builidings, are on the western outskirts of the city. The campus takes about 20 minutes to reach by city trolley buses (No 3 direction Maj and No 15 direction Vltava, both stop at Jana Opletala). If you travel by car from Prague, you can either go via Pisek or via Tabor (both take about 2 hours, the first route is usually a little faster). News Department of Theoretical Biology seeks a highly motivated person with a background in biophysics/mathematics/theoretical biology (with strong mathematical skills) to start research in molecular and cellular modelling (modelling cell regulatory networks, gene interactions etc.), mathematical physiology and related fields. Applications containing CV and proposed research outline should be sent to
