Learning Domains or Bloom's Taxonomy
The Three Types of Learning
There is more than one type of learning. A committee of colleges, led by Benjamin Bloom, identified three domains of educational activities:
  • Cognitive : mental skills ( Knowledge
  • Affective : growth in feelings or emotional areas ( Attitude
  • Psychomotor : manual or physical skills ( Skills
Since the work was produced by higher education, the words tend to be a little bigger than we normally use. Domains can be thought of as categories. Trainers often refer to these three domains as KSA (Knowledge, Skills, and Attitude). This taxonomy of learning behaviors can be thought of as "the goals of the training process." That is, after the training session, the learner should have acquires new skills, knowledge, and/or attitudes. The committee also produced an elaborate compilation for the cognitive and affective domains, but none for the psychomotor domain. Their explanation for this oversight was that they have little experience in teaching manual skills within the college level (I guess they never thought to check with their sports or drama department). This compilation divides the three domains into subdivisions, starting from the simplest behavior to the most complex. The divisions outlined are not absolutes and there are other systems or hierarchies that have been devised in the educational and training world. However, Bloom's taxonomy is easily understood and is probably the most widely applied one in use today.

The current taxonomy of rhizobia [Updated 17th June 2005] The species listed here are all of the most current validly published names for the rhizobia. The rhizobia are nitrogen fixing bacteria that form root nodules on legume plants. Most of these bacterial species are in the Rhizobiacae family in the alpha-proteobacteria. Most rhizobia are in either the Rhizobium Mesorhizobium Sinorhizobium or Bradyrhizobium genera. However recent research has shown that there are other rhizobial species outside these genera. In addition there are other non-rhizobia species present in the Rhizobium genus, such as Rhizobium radiobacter , formally known as Agrobacterium tumefaciens . However these are not listed here as the ' Agrobacterium ' do not form nitrogen fixing symbiotic root nodules, and are therefore not rhizobia. I have started a page about these

As a guideline to create these resource pages, we used the "Classification Of Life" in Appendix Three from the 4th edition of Biology by Neil A. Campbell. The textbook states "This appendix presents the taxonomic classification used for the major groups of organisms discussed in this text; not all phyla are included. Plant and fungal divisions are the taxonomic equivalents of phyla. The classification reviewed here is based on the five-kingdom system..." Use the dictionary and encyclopedia links to help define and, in some cases, provide the scientific name for your chosen organism(s). For much more detailed information, select an appropriate Kingdom from this chart.

Portals Taxonomy Security Cataloging unstructured information is a chronic problem for every organization. Following boom after boom of software for creating information - from Word Processing to Web Publishing - we today have far more resources focused on the generation of content than on the ability to effectively utilize it. Lack of information is no longer the problem - but lack of time to correlate, categorize, analyze and act on the information is a business critical issue. Delphi Group has defined the emerging software segment for taxonomy management and set the benchmark for advisory services to combat problem of "infoglut" through its groundbreaking educational forums, consulting methods, and research. The National Science Foundation (NSF) , in partnership with academic institutions, botanical gardens, freshwater and marine institutes, and natural history museums, seeks to enhance and stimulate taxonomic research and help prepare future generations of experts. NSF announces a special competition, Partnerships for Enhancing Expertise in Taxonomy (PEET), to support competitively reviewed research projects that target groups of poorly known organisms. This effort is designed to encourage the training of new generations of taxonomists and to translate current expertise into electronic databases and other formats with broad accessibility to the scientific community. Introduction
We use this lab in Patterns and Processes , and Tropical Marine Ecology . This exercise illustrates the creativity involved in taxonomy and the roles form and function, ancestral traits and derived characters play in generating classification schemes. It can also serve as an introduction to topics in evolution and paleontology. We have noticed that in the field, after completing this exercise, students begin to recognize distinctions and similarities in fauna which they may have not noticed before. OfficePort Home OfficePort Educational Syllabus Threaded Reflection ... Study Hall In 1956, Benjamin Bloom headed a group of educational psychologists who developed a classification of levels of intellectual behavior important in learning. Bloom found that over 95 % of the test questions students encounter require them to think only at the lowest possible level...the recall of information. Bloom identified six levels within the cognitive domain, from the simple recall or recognition of facts, as the lowest level, through increasingly more complex and abstract mental levels, to the highest order which is classified as evaluation. Verb examples that represent intellectual activity on each level are listed here.
  • Knowledge : arrange, define, duplicate, label, list, memorize, name, order, recognize, relate, recall, repeat, reproduce state. Comprehension : classify, describe, discuss, explain, express, identify, indicate, locate, recognize, report, restate, review, select, translate, Application : apply, choose, demonstrate, dramatize, employ, illustrate, interpret, operate, practice, schedule, sketch, solve, use, write.
