The theory has contributed to the understanding of certain evolutionary traits in the animal world, such as how instinctive parental behaviors of animals are determined in part by the need to ensure survival of offspring. A related aspect of sociobiology deals with altruistic behaviors in general. In a theory called kin selection, animals that behave altruistically would have their genes passed on by helping relatives who share their genes survive to reproduce, just as they would by producing offspring of their own.

Vol. 8, Academic Questions Edward O. Wilson is Pellegrino University Professor at Harvard University and Curator in Entomology at the Museum of Comparative Zoology (Agassiz Museum), Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02138. Presented here is his keynote address to the November 1994 convention of the National Association of Scholars in Cambridge, MA. A portion was taken in slightly modified form from Professor Wilson's autobiography, Naturalist (Washington, D.C. and Covelo, Calif.: Island Press-Shearwater Books, 1994). I have composed this text with considerable humility because it is addressed to scholars and scientists many of whom speak more authoritatively on the history and philosophy of science than I. My own preferred reading list on the subject would include Gerald Holton's Science and Anti-Science and the wonderfully scorching book, Higher Superstition by Paul Gross and Norman Levitt. For a full reading list that could compose a complete college course on the subject, I would add John Passmore's Science and Its Critics , published in 1978, and Steven Weinberg's adamantine image of the power and ideology-demolishing reach of modern physics in his book Dreams of a Final Theory . In many ways I would defer to these authors. I hope they nonetheless might agree with me that the nobility of science as a human endeavor was well encapsulated by the physicist Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar when he used the Icarus metaphor in praise of Sir Arthur Eddington. He said, "Let us see how high we can fly before the sun melts the wax in our wings." And on the appropriateness of the rosette of the National Academy of Sciences, the other NAS, that is splendidly symbolic in this sense: the gold of science is placed solidly in the center, surrounded by the purple of natural philosophy. Members are elected primarily or solely on the basis of objective discoveries they have made, expressible in clear declarative sentences, and not by any ideological test.

It appears to me, as I plan and drink my coffee, that I am making decisions – that I have choices about what I will do, that my actions that day are voluntary. Our entire society is based upon this idea that we have a choice over how we behave. If we drive faster than the speed limit, and a police office sees us speeding, that office will stop us and give us a ticket, a fine, and the purpose of that fine is to help us choose not to speed, but to choose instead to drive more slowly. In our Western Culture, we think of this ability to make choices about our lives as a secular, universally accepted principle: we assume human beings have a freedom of will.

Sociobiology is a branch of biology that attempts to explain animal behavior and social structures in terms of evolutionary advantage or strategy. It uses techniques from ethology evolution and population genetics The term 'sociobiology' was coined by Edward Osborne Wilson in the 1970s. He wrote the famous Sociobiology: The New Synthesis . Sociobiology attempts to explain the evolutionary mechanics behind social behaviors such as altruism aggression , and nurturance. Individual genetic advantage fails to explain many social behaviors. However, genetic evolution appears to act on social groups. The mechanisms that select in groups are statistical and can be harder to grasp than individual selection. The analytical processes of sociobiology, use paradigms and population statistics similar to actuarial analyses of the insurance industry or game theory A vivid example of altruism is when a serviceman throws himself onto a hand grenade to save his buddies. A genetic trait encouranging this "altruism" may help his society expand its gene pool at the expense of societies that lack this trait. So, this genetic trait will survive and increase even though it destroys individuals Colin Turnbull found another suporting example (described in The Mountain People ) about an African tribe, the "Ik," which he said so lacked altruism that the society lost battles with neighboring tribes.

Sociobiological theory
Sociobiologists do not believe that animal or human behaviour can be explained entirely by " cultural " or " environmental " factors. They believe that in order to fully understand behaviour it must be analyzed with some focus on its evolutionary origins. If Darwin 's theory of natural selection is accepted, then evolved behavioural mechanisms that allowed an

sociobiology is the belief that human beings have real natures and This is the partial truth of sociobiology, if not the whole truth about being human.
http://www.thenewatlantis.com/archive/1/lawler.htm
The Rise and Fall of Sociobiology Peter Augustine Lawler hree views of the relationship between human beings and nature have been hugely influential in recent decades: social constructionism, sociobiology, and biotechnology. Each contains a good deal of truth, and each is still an influential force today. But like all popularized science, these big pictures gain clarity by distorting reality. Each presents part of the truth about being human by disfiguring the whole. Social constructionism is the belief that human nature does not matter or exist, and that most of what we believe about human nature is actually the product of human institutions and cultures, and therefore open to be changed. Sociobiology is the belief that human beings have real natures and natural purposes, but natures and purposes that are fully intelligible through evolution and not really different from those of the other animals. Biotechnology is not so much a belief but a project, which involves using our knowledge of human biology to improve human life and perhaps remake human nature. It thus presumes at least some measure of discontent with what we are now, as well as the existence of an objective biological nature (or “system”) which it can reliably manipulate.

The Origins of Virtue: Human Instincts and the Evolution of Cooperation
Matt Ridley
Viking Penguin, $24.95 If you've ever read Sinclair Lewis's Arrowsmith , you surely recall Dr. Tubbs. The ur -technocrat who understood precious little of the science done in the institute he ran, the vapid Tubbs would pop into a lab just long enough to announce that he was off to yet another conference on teamwork in science. For cooperation, he invariably added, was the next "Real Big Thing in Science." Tubbs was not only a believable character (in a novel desperately short of them), he was a prophetic one. The ratio of Tubbses to Arrowsmiths in science of technically clueless hangers-on to those who sit before a lab benchhas grown ever more lop-sided since Lewis's time. But Tubbs was prophetic in another way too. Cooperation, it seems

Sociobiology: Implications for Human Studies June 14 and 15, 1977 The NEXA Program presented a two day symposium on the controversial subject of sociobiology. Held on the San Francisco State University campus on June 14 and 15, 1977, the symposium was funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and coordinated by Anita Silvers, Professor of Philosophy at SFSU. The symposium coincided with the 58th annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (Pacific Division) also held on the campus. Academic debate arose out of the work of Harvard zoologist Edward 0. Wilson as presented in his 1975 book: Sociobiology: The New Synthesis. Wilson claims that sociobiology is a new discipline that studies the biological basis of human behavior. Indeed, he claims that all or most species-specific behavior is genetically determined. The NEXA Program called together scholars from the sciences and humanities to debate the subject for the first time. The free, two-day program held in McKenna Theater was publicized in the "New York Review of Books" and attracted 700 people to hear five panel discussions covering the following topics: What is Sociobiology?
