Book recommendations

Okay, here is my list of book recommendations for understanding the evolutionary behavioral sciences (including sociobiology and evolutionary psychology). None of these books are all that "lightweight", but they don't require a background in biology to understand.
- The Selfish Gene (Richard Dawkins)
This is a classic for a reason. All the evolutionary sciences are based on genetics and evolutionary biology. You don't need to read genetics textbooks to understand them, but you need to know the basic how-and-why of evolution. This is a very good starting point. If you come out of it wanting more, Dawkins' "The Extended Phenotype" goes into more depth but is a harder read.
- Darwin's Dangerous Idea (Daniel Dennett)
More philosophical and high-concept overview of evolution, whereas The Selfish Gene was more nitty-gritty. But this is also an essential book for anyone wanting to understand the evolutionary principles underlying sociobiology. A really great book.
- The Adapted Mind (Leda Cosmides and John Tooby)
This is a book of academic papers, and not for everyone. However it is THE book which launched evolutionary psychology as a field. It covers the classic stuff - why study the mind from an evolutionary perspective, what it has to say about sex differences, mating behavior, cognition, social strategies, etc.

Introduction: What Is Sociobiology?
I was surprisedeven astonishedby the initial reaction to Sociobiology: The New Synthesis (1975a). When the book was published in 1975, I expected a favorable reaction from other biologists. After all, my colleagues and I had merely been extending neo-Darwinism into the study of social behavior and animal societies, and the underlying biological principles we employed were largely conventional. The response was in fact overwhelmingly favorable. From the social scientists, I expected not much reaction. I took it for granted that the human species is subject to sociobiological analysis no less than to genetic or endocrinological analysis; the final chapter of my book simply completed the catalogue of social species by adding Homo sapiens . I hoped to make a contribution to the social sciences and humanities by laying out, in immediately accessible form, the most relevant methods and principles of population biology, evolutionary theory, and sociobiology. I expected that many social scientists, already convinced of the necessity of a biological foundation for their subject, would be tempted to pick up the tools and try them out. This has occurred to a limited extent, but there has also been stiff resistance. I now understand that I entirely underestimated the Durkheim-Boas tradition of autonomy of the social sciences, as well as the strength and power of the antigenetic bias that has prevailed as virtual dogma since the fall of Social Darwinism.

All Things Explained: A look into sociobiology
Susanna Jones
"Science offers the boldest metaphysics of the age: the faith that if we dream, press to discover, explain, and dream again, thereby plunging repeatedly into new terrain, the world will somehow become clearer and we will grasp the true strangeness of the universe, and the strangeness will all prove to be connected and make sense." Edward O. Wilson
Just by flipping through the pages of a newspaper or watching the local news, it becomes obvious how great an impact science has on our current thinking. The media has become a showroom for scientific exploits; we hear about gene discoveries, we have a newfound reverence for the ER room, we have ten drug options for every ailment. Science has become the authority on everything from illness to the environment. When the time comes to write a paper for a biology class, the problem isn't what to write about, it is what not to write about. With this in mind, it is not surprising that anyone with a romantic spirit, an affinity for magic, and a secret desire to believe in the X Files, has difficulty accepting that the intricacies of the world can be explained away by science. Is there such a thing as the unknown, or is everything just waiting to be scientifically identified?

See the Patriarchy Tumblin' Down!: Using Sociobiology to Bolster Feminist Claims
Lydia Parnell
The ideal visions generated in the days of 1969 seem long behind the coming of the 21st century boy, however those brief moments of free love and the formation of notions dealing with unity and equality continue to resonate today. The sixties and seventies brought upon an increased feminist consciousness, with many working to expand the rights of women in the workplace and inside the home. In the past ten years however, the word 'feminism' has become enshrouded with negative euphemisms, and perhaps in a bit of an attempt to add more claim to the feminist cause, biology has been incorporated into feminist theory, added to deliver an additional punch into a chauvinist gut. 'Feminist Biology', if it may be called as such, relies on the findings of sociobiology to bolster feminist claims. In the belief that ones current state is based upon a complex interaction of genetics and social environment, feminists are able to "lay bare the harsh reality of nature"

sociobiology, controversial field that studies how natural selection, previously used only to explain the evolution of physical characteristics, shapes behavior in animals and humans. The theory has contributed to the understanding of certain evolutionary traits in the animal world, such as how instinctive parental behaviors of animals are determined in part by the need to ensure survival of offspring. A related aspect of sociobiology deals with altruistic behaviors in general. In a theory called kin selection, animals that behave altruistically would have their genes passed on by helping relatives who share their genes survive to reproduce, just as they would by producing offspring of their own. The theory first gained attention when Edward O.

On this page: Essay Mentioned In Or search: - The Web - Images - News - Blogs - Shopping Ecology and sociobiology Essay Ecology and sociobiology Ecology is the science of the relationship between organisms and their environment. Some aspects were studied as early as 1789 or perhaps even earlier. The word itself was coined in 1866 (it means "study of the house"). But ecology really came into its own after World War II. One reason for this is certainly the environmental movement that began seriously in 1962 with Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring and intensified in the 1970s. The popularity of environmental causes attracted people to ecology, sometimes in the mistaken belief that ecology is the science of avoiding pollution. Biologists might date their own environmental movement from publication in 1967 of The Theory of Island Biogeography by Robert MacArthur and Edward O. Wilson, which explored stability and fragility of species in restricted habitats. Another reason for gains in ecology in the 1960s and 1970s has been the postwar development of the computer. Ecology is very much concerned with numbers and mathematical models, since it treats a great many individuals interacting with each other and with their physical surroundings all at once. Prewar models of how populations behave were computed by hand or with mechanical calculators. By the mid-1970s, an ecologist could feed a formula into a computer and see how a population stabilized, became periodic, or exploded depending on the choice of a single parameter. With such a tool in hand, much of the work in ecology during the 1960s and 1970s concentrated on finding how competition among species or individuals for niches ways of living affect populations. Energy distribution in populations also became easier to determine.

Developed and popularized by American zoologist Edward O. Wilson (1929- ) in his text Sociobiology: The New Synthesis (1975), this is the study of animal and human social behavior in the light of evolutionary biology. Sociobiology encompasses the idea that evolution by natural selection applies to behavior as it applies to physiology and morphology, and that genes affect behaviour and will be selected for if the behavior enhances the 'fitness' of the organism for its environment. A relatively new field of study, sociobiology remains controversial, especially when applied to human behavior. Source:

Sociobiology is a branch of biology and also sociology that attempts to throw light upon behavior in both human and non-human societies in terms of evolutionary advantage or strategy . It uses techniques from ethology evolution sociology , and population genetics . Within the study of humans, Sociobiology is closely linked to the field of evolutionary psychology The term "sociobiology" was coined by E. O. From EvoWiki
Sociobiology is the field of science which studies how interpersonal behavior is influenced by innate biological drives (i.e. genes ). While sociobiology does have its critics, it is clearly absurd to suppose that such drives have no influence on behavior, therefore it makes sense to try to determine the true extent of that influence. Sociobiology is a sub-discipline of ethology , and is related to the field of evolutionary psychology The term was coined by Edward Wilson in his book of the same name This page is a "stub"!
