Historical Introduction (... or 'why do we need to know this?')
The anatomy of the connections between eye and brain has been known since the turn of the century. However, knowledge of circuit diagrams alone is not enough to infer neural function. Before recordings of activity in individual cells became available in the 1950's, theories of perception were inspired by anatomy. The brain was known to contain huge numbers of cells, massively interconnected (but only over short distances) in circuits that are similar over the whole cortex. Studies of localised brain damage (eg. following gunshot wounds) also showed that the visual cortex was mapped topographically. These facts inspired the Electrical Field Theory of perception.
Visual patterns were thought to set up corresponding fields of electrical activity across the surface of the cortex (see the picture above). Perceptual organisation in complex displays was said to be governed by interactions between these current fields. Experimental tests of the theory included attempts to short-circuit the electrical fields by pinning metallic strips across the surface of the cortex in rhesus monkeys, and then performing tests of visual functioning (eg. Lashley et al.

Current projects include a quantitative analysis of the architecture of muscle fibre layers in the heart and the role of cardiac connective tissue in this organization. An innovative imaging system is being developed to study the deformation of these structures under both passive and active mechanical loading. These studies will provide new insight into the way in which stress and deformation are distributed through the walls of the normal and abnormal heart.

Physiology
Physiology is the study of processes in living tissue at the cellular, organ and whole-body organizational levels. Physiologists analyze body-organ function, both separately and as part of an integrated system. Physicians must know this discipline thoroughly since most disease processes are expressions of abnormal physiology. Physiology, as a discipline, is integrated into the medical school curriculum with other basic medical sciences. It is presented as part of a problem-solving approach to teaching normal and abnormal mammalian function. This cooperative effort allows students to bring together scientific knowledge from several disciplines to explain patient symptoms, diagnoses and therapy. The scientific method is emphasized by faculty tutors as students, in small groups, seek to apply physiological principles in explaining events that occur in simulated patient models. The department offers a doctorate in physiology, and graduate students are supported financially by federal training and research grants as well as assistantships. Students may consider a six-year program to obtain a joint MD and PhD degree. Broad areas of specialization include cardiovascular, membrane, renal and endocrine physiology.

"...Physiology is the science which investigates those phenomena that are characteristic of the living being... We study here the vital process itself, independent of the forms and mechanisms, through which it reveals itself." Claude Bernard (Readings on the Phenomenon of Life
The Department of Physiology is housed in Sanger Hall, on the Medical College of Virginia campus of Virginia Commonwealth University. The faculty are engaged in research in a number of areas, often in collaboration with other departments in the School of Medicine as well as other units of the university. Specialized collaborative groups in the Department include the Chemical Senses Gastrointestinal Physiology and Cardiovascular Research Focus Groups. The Department also houses the School of Medicine's Confocal Microscope Facility , a state of the art imaging instrument. The Department offers graduate programs leading to M.S., Ph.D., and M.D./Ph.D. dual degrees, as well as a post-baccalaureate certificate program.
