DFG Research Center for Molecular Physiology of the Brain
The human brain is probably the most complex structure that nature ever produced. 100 billion neurons and 10 times as many glia cells build up an intricate network that accomplishes extraordinary tasks, such as sensation, learning and memory. All these functions are in the last instance conducted by molecules. A modern molecular physiology investigates the molecules' function and their role in the context of the brains' network systems. The application of insights from this research field to the therapy and diagnostic of neuronal diseases is one of the great challenges of this century. The CMPB pursues this goal with an interdisciplinary research program.

The Physiology of Perception
By Walter J. Freeman
The brain transforms sensory messages into conscious perceptions almost instantly Chaotic, collective activity involving millions of neurons seems essential for such rapid recognition.
From: February 1991 Scientific American, Vol 264, (2) Pgs. 78-85.
WALTER J. FREEMAN is professor of Neurobiology at the University of California, Berkeley. He received an M.D. from Yale University in 1954 and completed postdoctoral training in neurophysiology at the University of California, Los Angeles, in l959, the year he joined the Berkeley faculty. W hen a person glimpses the face of a famous actor, sniffs a favorite food or hears the voice of a friend, recognition is instant. Within a fraction of a second after the eyes, nose, ears, tongue or skin is stimulated, one knows the object is familiar and whether it is desirable or dangerous. How does such recognition, which psychologists call preattentive perception, happen so accurately and quickly, even when the stimuli are complex and the context in which they arise varies?
Much is known about the way the cerebral cortex, the outer rind of the brain, initially analyzes sensory messages. Yet investigations are only now beginning to suggest how the brain moves beyond the mere extraction of features-how it combines sensory messages with past experience and with expectation to identify both the stimulus and its particular meaning to the individual.

PRINCIPLES OF

Rudolf Steiner

(Appendix 6 of Von Seelenrätseln (1917), translated and commented by Owen Barfield, and published 1970 as "The Case for Anthroposophy", extracts from Von Seelenrätseln, by London: Rudolf Steiner Press . Put here with the kind permission of R. S. Press.) My object here is to present in outline certain conclusions I have reached concerning the relations between the psychic and the physical components of the human being. I may add that, in doing so, I place on record the results of a systematic spiritual investigation extending over a period of thirty years. It is only in the last few of those years that it has become practicable to formulate these results in concepts capable of verbal expression, and thus to bring the investigation to at least a temporary close. I must emphasise that it is the results and the results alone that I shall be presenting, or rather indicating, in what follows. Their foundation in fact can certainly be established on the basis of contemporary science. But to do this would require a substantial volume; and that my present circumstances do not permit of my writing. If we are seeking for the actual relation between psychic and physical, it will not do to take as our starting-point Brentano's distribution of psychic experience into representation, judgement and the responses of love and hate. Partitioning in this way, we are led to shelve so many relevant considerations that we shall reach no reliable results. On the contrary we have to
