107. Auditory System: Physiology Tour
A tutorial on the anatomy and physiology of where and how sound is processed in the brain.
http://serous.med.buffalo.edu/hearing
The Auditory Central Nervous System the system The human auditory system provides us with vast amounts of information about the world around us. Our auditory system allows us to make pitch and tone judgments . These are essential to appreciation of music and contribute to our understanding speech. In physics terms, pitch tells us about the frequency of sound. Our ears (or more accurately our ears and brains) also allow us to locate the source of a sound. To perform this localization function, the brain combines timing (or more specifically delay or phase) and amplitude information from the sound with information from our other senses. This web site is about how our brains process the relatively simple information given to it by the cochlea into conscious and unconscious perceptions of the world around us.
the site This site was built as part of a neurophysiology course. It was designed to provide an overview of the pathways traveled by auditory information through the central nervous system. It is intended primarily for pre-med and medical students, but I have attempted to make it as accessible as possible. In general the site is organized into sections based on the major anatomical structures in the auditory pathway. From there the reader can delve as deep as they feel comfortable into the physiology and connectivity of any particular structure. I have tried to take advantage of the non-linear nature of web browsing by providing links for the reader to jump to related material in other sections.

Careers/Mentoring
Careers in physiology provide opportunities to conduct cutting-edge research, teach the next generation of scientists and medical professionals, and share the excitement of science with the general public. This website provides extensive resources for two major purposes. 1) To help the general public gain a better understanding of the work that physiologists do; and 2) To assist students and new and experienced physiologists in the development of their careers. Information is provided on career topics and on mentoring.
Mentoring
This web site has information on the APS Career Mentoring Program as well as other general information on mentoring for both mentors and mentees.
Positions Available
The American Physiological Society is pleased to make its Career Opportunities Web page available to the physiological community for sharing of career opportunities. Ads are accepted for either positions available or positions wanted under all categories.

Careers
This web site is for individuals interested in or currently pursuing a career in Physiology. The site is divided into the following sections:

109. The Graduate Program In Neuroscience
The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Neuroscience and Cell Biology department pursues strong state-of-the-art research in various biological fields using its advanced research facilities.
http://www2.umdnj.edu/neuroweb/index.htm
News Release Carmine Guirland, who successfully defended his doctoral dissertation on April 6th, has been selected to receive the 2005 Stanley S. Bergen, Jr. M.D. Medal of Excellence.
High tech research labs are addressing some of the most important problems in neurobiology. Excellent research libraries and facilities make this program one of the best in the world. Research faculty investigate a broad range of neuroscientific areas. Top priority projects include studies of neural developmental regulatory genes in humans, mice, Drosophila , and C. elegans , mechanisms of action of neurotrophins, synaptic plasticity, neural regeneration, stem cells and a wide variety of basic brain cell functions.
The Graduate Program in Neuroscience is also a participating member of Rutgers Igert program: http://www.igert.rutgers.edu , an NSF-Funded program including training of graduate students in integrative synthesis and analysis of biological interfaces The Stem Cell Institute of New Jersey , a State funded partnership between UDMNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Rutgers University, is one of the world leaders on this research frontier.
