http://www.physiologyeducation.org/
A collaboration of physiology educators nationwide dedicated to improving life science education in general and physiology education in particular. WHAT IS PERC? The P hysiology E ducational R esearch C onsortium ( PERC
Our most recently completed research project focused on learning more about the knowledge and skills base that undergraduate students have as they enter respiratory physiology and how this knowledge and skills base matches the expectations of faculty. Our current research extends this work to other areas of physiology and examines ways in which faculty can best help students correct their misconceptions and develop problem solving skills. Previous projects dealing with active learning and appropriate use of technology in the classroom have been reported in various publications and monographs.
To help students learn various aspects of physiology, our members have developed software, problem books, and textbooks. To help faculty, we conduct workshops focused on promoting an active learning environment. These workshops have been held at national and international meetings as well as at contracting institutions. The PERC website is best viewed in a browser capable of displaying frames.

Abductors
- muscle taking a limb or the jaw away from the body.
Acetyl choline - A neurotransmitter substance found at all cholinergic synapses including those of motoneurones at the neuromuscular junction.
Acini - the secreting units of a gland. Each acinus is a sack-like structure, lined by secreting cells. The sack opens out into a tubule.
Acute necrotising ulcerative gingivitis -abbreviated to ANUG- a painful and destructive infection of the gingiva caused by a shift in the normal balance of bacteria in the gingival sulcus, in which fusobacteria and spirochaetes become dominant.
Adapt - to modify in response to change. When used in regard to evolution, it means that some structure or behaviour of an organism may over time, appear to change in response toa new threat or opportunity in the environment. The bacterium which causes tuberculosis has developed certain strains which have adapted to the antibiotics used to treat the disease which is now becoming more difficult to treat.
Adductors - muscle bringing a limb or the jaw towards the body.

Participants of the 7th International Symposium. The symposium convened on the shores of the Baltic Sea in Tallinn, Estonia. It was a great success; scientists and students from 15 nations gathered to discuss current work related to eutrophication and hypoxia, as they affect both freshwater and marine fishes. Manuscripts from the symposium will be published in a proceedings volume and available for download from this website during 2004. Symposium sponsors included the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the Estonian Academy of Sciences, the Estonian Agricultural University, the International Section of the American Fisheries Society and Montana State University (USA). Members of the Organizing Committee included: Gretchen Rupp and Michelle White, Montana State University; Arvo Tuvikene, Estonian Agricultural University; George Bailey, US Environmental Protection Agency; Dave Randall, University of British Columbia and City University of Hong Kong, and John Steffensen, University of Copenhagen. However, I have committed myself to updating the material here in 2005 and am already underway. I read all and try to answer most email questions, and post a small selection here, but I can't promise that I will respond to every question. HOMEPAGE of VISION CONCEPTS
THE BASIS OF THE NEURAL SYSTEM
from PROCESSES IN BIOLOGICAL VISION
by JAMES T. FULTON
Citation Page
INTRODUCTION
In developing the theory presented in PROCESSES IN BIOLOGICAL VISION , it was found that there was no satisfactory treatise on the BASIS OF THE NEURAL SYSTEM . The main work was stymied by this situation. It was necessary to overcome this problem and the result is presented here. Two fundamental finding and one major discovery resulted from this effort:
  • The morphologically defined neuron is not the fundamental element of the neural system from a functional perspective.
The functional aspects of the neural system are entirely electrolytic in operation

    • The chemical transport of simple ions, or heavy molecules, at the synapse separating neurons does not play a role in the signaling function of the neural system.
The discovery of the active electrolytic semiconductor device, . It placed the functional role of the various morphological structures in proper perspective and provided the correct interpretation of the operational phenomena involved. The Activa is a unique biologically based structure that exhibits "transistor action" The term "transistor action" is a term in the Patent lexicon to define a unique quantum mechanical mechanism. The Activa, US Patent #5,946,185, is the electrolytic (biological) equivalent of the man-made transistor.
