Course Lecture Schedule
Student Course Evaluation
An intensive and comprehensive laboratory-oriented course in cellular and molecular neurobiology intended primarily for predoctoral students, postdoctoral or clinical researchers, and young investigators beginning independent research careers. Limited to 12 students. A hallmark of this course is the extensive lab work done in close collaboration with expert faculty. The course is divided into three sections, each lasting three weeks: Electrophysiology, Imaging, and Molecular Biology. These are taught by separate groups of faculty, six in each section, and with many guest lecturers. Each section begins with specific training in core laboratory techniques; students then undertake one- to two-week directed or independent projects using the methods they have learned. Didactic lectures are combined with laboratory experience in order to establish a strong conceptual foundation for each section. A typical day has 3 hours of lecture and 10 hours of lab.

Social Anxiety Disorder (Social Phobia)
Effective Treatment 2005
Nothing for Sale! Welcome and Enjoy!

September 2005
Welcome to my website! My name is Chad Miller. Shy kid and Social Anxiety Disorder (formerly called Social Phobia) since teens, my Social Anxiety became pretty severe by late high school. At 26 I finally found out the name "Social Phobia" and that it was medically treatable. Substantial improvement in the quality of life is within the reach of most all with untreated Social Anxiety Disorder. Current research is being done to promote earlier diagnosis and treatment (onset in the childhood or teenage years is common).
A Recent Abstract on Social Anxiety Disorder:
Journal of Clinical Psychiatry 2001;62 Suppl 12:24-9
Comorbidity, Neurobiology, and Pharmacotherapy of Social Anxiety Disorder.
Pollack MH, Department of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston 02114
(End of abstract)
Symptoms of Social Anxiety Disorder: Social Anxiety Disorder is a persistent fear of one or more situations in which the person is exposed to possible scrutiny by others and fears that he or she may do something or act in a way that will be humiliating or embarrassing. It exceeds normal "shyness" when it leads to excessive social avoidance and substantial social or occupational impairment. Feared activities may include most any type of social interaction, especially small groups, dating, parties, talking to strangers, restaurants, etc. Physical symptoms include "mind going blank", fast heartbeat, blushing, stomach ache. Cognitive distortions are a hallmark, and learned about in CBT. Thoughts are often self-defeating and inaccurate.

School of Neurology, Neurobiology and Psychiatry
Welcome to the School of Neurology, Neurobiology and Psychiatry at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. We comprise two major disciplines - Neuroscience (Neurology, Neurobiology and Ophthalmology) and Psychiatry. This means we have a wide range of research interests within the School. We welcome applications from graduates wishing to join our postgraduate research programme or study on one of our taught degree programmes We are part of the Faculty of Medical Sciences and have close links with staff throughout the University. School staff contribute to the teaching of undergraduate courses within the Faculty and University including the teaching of medical, dental, speech, biomedical science and biological sciences students.

Completed Phase II on left Construction of a new addition to the research center (Phase II) began in August 2002 and is now complete. Phase II of the facility was ready for occupancy at the end of December, 2003, adding another 52,000 square feet of laboratory space to the existing 71,000 square feet of Phase I. The new space will house between 12 and 14 investigator-led teams of researchers who will conduct clinically relevant basic science studies in priority areas of pediatric research, including developmental biology, disease pathogenesis, neurobiology, genetics, and child health. In addition to the 55 new benches in the laboratory, Phase II also adds three medium sized conference rooms, shared procedure and cold rooms and increased equipment space for large shared use items. A ribbon cutting ceremony marking the completion of Phase II is scheduled for January 26, 2004, at which time our generous family of supporters will be invited to tour this state-of-the-art facility.
Strengthening the Research Enterprise
CMIER has taken several important steps to further its vision of becoming a preeminent child health research organization dedicated to improving the health of children in Chicago and nationwide.

ALLISON EBERT, PHD
Congratulations to Allison Rufatto-Ebert, PhD, who successfully defended her doctoral dissertation entitled “Adenoviral vector-mediated gene delivery of dominant-negative caspase-9 (Casp9DN) prevents 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-induced death of dopaminergic neurons in cell culture, but not in an adult rat model of Parkinson’s disease” on January 21, 2005. Rufatto-Ebert completed her research under the guidance of Martha Bohn, PhD, in the Neurobiology Program at Children’s Memorial Research Center. She will be graduating with a PhD from the Northwestern Institute for Neuroscience on June 17, 2005.
