The Institute is devoted to experimental research on the development, functions, and diseases of the nervous system. Emphasis of research is on the areas of molecular developmental biology, cellular and systems studies of neural plasticity, pathology and immunology of the central and peripheral nervous system, and information processing in the invertebrate visual system. The institute is organized in four departments whose heads run the institute as a board of directors. There are many connections betweens these main directions of scientific work, in the form of projects with overlapping themes. Approx. 240 employees are working in departments, junior research groups, and service groups. The institute is part of the lifesciences and biotech campus Martinsried-Grosshadern near Munich. [more]

As might be expected, neurobiology is the study of the body's nervous system. Many of the studies in neurobiology focus on the brain, but students also learn how the nervous system affects various functions such as behavior, states of consciousness and autonomic functions. The study of neurobiology can also be related to understanding and attempting to cure diseases, particularly those that affect the brain and nervous system. Related fields include: cancer biology cellular/molecular biology conservation biology developmental biology ... health sciences , and . Cancer biology can also provide a good foundation for those interested in becoming medical doctors or pursuing medical research . Some programs also tend to have a business application such as those in the biotechnology or

The Retreat There has never been a more exciting time to study neurobiology. Novel molecular, cellular, systems-level, and computational techniques are now used to explore the functions of the brain to an extent that was unforeseen only a short time ago. More than ever before, it is critical to work in an environment that fosters an interdisciplinary scientific and technical approach to neurobiology. The University of Chicago's Committee on Neurobiology, with more than 45 neurobiology faculty members using state-of-the-art techniques, is such a place. The Committee on Neurobiology is a large, interdisciplinary program dedicated to graduate education in neurobiology. All students receive concentrated attention from faculty who serve as mentors, advisory committee members and course instructors. Research strengths at UC include molecular neurobiology, cellular neurophysiology, developmental neurobiology, systems neuroscience and computational neurobiology The typical Neurobiology graduate student takes courses in Cellular Neurobiology, Neuroanatomy, Systems Neurophysiology, Molecular Neurobiology, and Cell Biology. A diverse range of specialized courses is also available. In addition to formal classwork, students learn constantly from the large number of seminars on campus, including weekly seminars by major visiting scientists in Neurobiology, Computational Neurobiology and Cell Physiology.
