Computational Neurobiology Laboratory at the Salk Institute
The long range goal of our laboratory is to understand the computational resources of brains from the biophysical to the systems levels. The central issues being addressed are how dendrites integrate synaptic signals in neurons, how networks of neurons generate dynamical patterns of activity, how sensory information is represented in the cerebral cortex, how memory representations are formed and consolidated during sleep, and how visuo-motor transformations are adaptively organized. New techniques have been developed for modeling cell signaling using Monte Carlo methods (MCell) and the blind separation of brain imaging data into functionally independent components (ICA).

    5. Research Network On Early Experience And Brain Development
Strives to be inter and multi-disciplinary by drawing on experts from developmental psychology, developmental neurobiology, and developmental/behavioral pediatrics.
    http://www.macbrain.org/
    Network Researchers
and Consultants Only OVERVIEW The Research Network on Early Experience and Brain Development was founded in 1998 to address questions of how the experiences of early childhood are incorporated into the structures of the developing brain , and how, in turn, those changes in the structures of the brain influence behavior . The network explores how knowledge of brain development can guide us in our understanding of behavioral development and vice versa. It focuses specifically on sensitive periods and neural plasticity, the reciprocal phenomena whereby (a) the brain is negatively affected if certain experiences fail to occur within a certain time period, and (b) the brain is altered by experience at virtually any point in the life span. Here we consider not only how the structure of experience is incorporated into the structure of the brain, but also how this knowledge can influence the decisions we make about intervening in the lives of children The majority of the Network's research is conducted by Network members. We do not consider unsolicited proposals.

High tech research labs are addressing some of the most important problems in neurobiology. Excellent research libraries and facilities make this program one of the best in the world. Research faculty investigate a broad range of neuroscientific areas. Top priority projects include studies of neural developmental regulatory genes in humans, mice, Drosophila , and C. elegans , mechanisms of action of neurotrophins, synaptic plasticity, neural regeneration, stem cells and a wide variety of basic brain cell functions.
The Graduate Program in Neuroscience is also a participating member of Rutgers Igert program: http://www.igert.rutgers.edu , an NSF-Funded program including training of graduate students in integrative synthesis and analysis of biological interfaces The Stem Cell Institute of New Jersey , a State funded partnership between UDMNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Rutgers University, is one of the world leaders on this research frontier.
