Description
Fungal Genetics and Biology , formerly known as Experimental Mycology , publishes experimental investigations of fungi and their traditional allies that relate structure and function to growth, reproduction, morphogenesis, and differentiation. This journal especially welcomes studies of gene organization and expression and of developmental processes at the cellular, subcellular, and molecular levels. The journal also includes suitable experimental inquiries into fungal cytology, biochemistry, physiology, genetics, and phylogeny. The journal offers one free color plate per article.
Fungal Genetics and Biology publishes basic research conducted by mycologists, cell biologists, biochemists, geneticists, and molecular biologists.

- steel yourself for some visual shocks "He stood up, undid his belt with extreme awkwardness, and dropped his trousers. 'Look!' said Juan. 'It hurts me a lot. It even hurts at night.' Two red patches, slightly scaly at the edges, spread widening up his inner thighs and disappeared under his pants. The fungus had got him." (quoted from In Trouble Again - A journey between the Orinoco and the Amazon by Redmond O'Hanlon). A 23-year-old bricklayer appeared at hospital with a 3-month history of running sores on his upper lip. Bald spots were appearing where the hair of his beard had fallen out... Five months before, he had noted that the muzzle of his dog was infected, and that its hair had fallen out. Cultures from Man and dog were identified as Trichophyton mentagrophytes , a common cause of skin, hair and nail infections in man and beast. Ketoconazole (200 mg twice a day for a month) produced a cure, but the moral of the tale is clear: kiss your dog at your peril. The Bibliography of Systematic Mycology
Since 1943 the Bibliography of Systematic Mycology ( BSM ) has provided a survey of the literature encompassing the biodiversity, classification, distribution, evolution, identification, nomenclature, phylogeny, systematics and taxonomy of fungi (including those groups traditionally treated as fungi but now better classified in other kingdoms). The printed BSM provides full bibliographic details of relevant literature from books, conference proceedings, monographs and serials arranged under broad taxonomic categories, with author and generic indexes, and is published twice a year, cumulating into a volume over five years. Some 1500-2000 items per annum give comprehensive cover of both the pure and applied systematic mycological literature, from the level of kingdom right down to population. Book reviews and notices are also included. A back-file of these records covering the period from 1986 is now searchable on-line using genus or author names. The editor (

Description of Unit Investigations
Nationwide, bloodstream infections with Candida species have increased by 219-487% between 1980-1989, and these organisms now account for 10% of all nosocomial bloodstream isolates. This incidence equals that of Escherichia coli and surpasses Klebsiella species. In addition to hematogenously disseminated candidal infections, mucocutaneous candidal infections are becoming increasingly problematic, especially in patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS); 80% of these patients have candidal infections. Adherence to epithelial cells is the first step in colonization by Candida and subsequent establishment of mucocutaneous infection. Similarly, adherence to intravascular structures is considered to be a critical step in the egress of the blood-borne fungi from the intravascular compartment, as they hematogenously infect target organs. Because the mortality rates associated with candidal infections remain disturbingly high despite the presence of antifungal agents with excellent in vitro activity against Candida , optimal therapy requires strategies to increase host resistance to candidal infection (such as blocking adherence), combined with the use of antifungal agents. After more than two decades of study, a single integrated understanding of the adhesive process in candidiasis has not evolved. One of our primary objectives in forming a

Mushrooms by Michelle Stone
For several years, I have been tromping around in the Santa Cruz mountains. My primary interest in photography started out to be wildflower macro. But the winter wet season astounded me with the wild variety of mushroom life. Here we see a banana slug devouring a red russula mushroom. During a break in work in 1993, I had the opportunity to spend a solid 3 months laying in wet mud puddles shooting these wonderful subjects. It wasn't long until I had a fine collection of mushrooms in my slide box. Ever since then, the yearly mushroom hunt has added to that treasure. Come, share the fruits of the rain with me. Use the photo buttons above to see other mushroom samples.
