Welcome
The Cellular and Molecular Biology (CMB) graduate program was founded in 1971 to meet the growing need to train scientists in the latest research techniques in a multidisciplinary setting. The CMB faculty of the University of Vermont (UVM) are from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, The College of Arts and Sciences, The College of Nursing and Health and The College of Medicine. Graduate education at UVM is characterized by a close and collegial environment that stresses active mentorship and scientific excellence. The central theme of the CMB program is to provide a rich experience at the forefront of modern biology focusing on collaborative research between students and investigators across the UVM campus. Currently the CMB program has over 40 students and 50 faculty from 17 different departments. Most students in the program are enrolled in the PhD program.

Kara Brunelle Kara earned her Bachelor's degree from Quinnipiac University in the spring of 2004. She enrolled in the CMB PhD program at UVM that fall. She is a part Dr. Wolfgang Dostmann's laboratory.

It does not go into depth on the terms, but can be useful if you are trying to understand a typical seminar or paper. For further information on any of these topics, please consult one of the standard cell and molecular biology textbooks (for example, "Molecular Biology of the Cell" by Alberts et al., 4th ed., Garland Science, New York NY, ISBN 0-8153-3218-1). (the 5' end of one strand pairs with the
3' end of the opposite strand). Figure 3: RNA transcription. RNA is synthesized in the 5' to 3' direction from a DNA strand which runs in the antiparallel direction (3' to 5'). In this diagram, the top DNA strand is the sense strand, and in sequence would read the same as the RNA (except with T's instead of U's). The bottom strand is the anti-sense strand, and acts as the template for transcription. Figure 4: A typical gene.

The Institute of Molecular Biology
fosters research and training in contemporary biology at the molecular level by bringing scientists from biology, chemistry, and physics into a common intellectual and physical space. Research laboratories are in close proximity to each other, encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration among faculty, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows. Graduate students are admitted through departments, and supported by the institute. Prospective students should indicate an interest in the institute when applying to one of the participating departments.

Aims and Scope: Recent advances in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry and biophysics have led to a spectacular increase in the understanding of biological membranes at the molecular level. Molecular Membrane Biology provides a forum for membrane researchers from diverse disciplines who have a primary interest in the study of biomembranes at the molecular level. Molecular Membrane Biology publishes high quality original papers and reviews that serve to advance knowledge and research in all molecular aspects of membrane structure and function including: receptors and signalling; transporters, pores and channels; synthesis and structure of membrane proteins; translocation and targeting; lipid Organization and asymmetry; fusion, endocytosis, exocytosis and recycling; and cytoskeletal and extracellular interactions of membranes.

We will venture beyond North America and Europe for the first time when ISMB 2003 convenes in Brisbane, Australia from June 29 to July 3, 2003. Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, is a cosmopolitan city of 1.6-1.8 million with three major universities and a growing biotechnology sector.
