Upgrading the site

Wednesday, August 24, 2005 - 03:51 PM
I am in the process of upgrading the site, so things may be a bit strange for a few weeks. Please be patient. Defining bacterial species Tuesday, April 05, 2005 - 04:23 PM Unlike macroorganisms that for the most part exchange DNA vertically (passing their DNA down to children and mixing this DNA by mating with others of the same species), microbes are capable of exchanging DNA horizontally. Some can pick up naked DNA from the environment (transformation), or have it passed to them by other microbes (conjugation), or receive it from viral heads (transduction). Rarely this new DNA will find a permanent home in the recipent, changing the genetic make-up of the microbe. In some cases this can cause large shifts in the capabilities of the microbe. For example, examination of the genome of

Welcome to BMC Microbiology published by BioMed Central BMC Microbiology publishes original research articles in analytical and functional studies of prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms, viruses and small parasites, as well as host and therapeutic responses to them. BMC Microbiology (ISSN 1471-2180) is indexed/tracked/covered by PubMed, MEDLINE, BIOSIS, CAS, Scopus, EMBASE, ISI and Google Scholar.
Research highlights
Cyanobacterial stress response
BMC Microbiology Inactivation of the Synechocystis genes for both phosphotransacetylase and the DspA histidine kinase greatly impedes the degradation of photosynthetic complexes during nitrogen depletion, suggesting that DspA is a sensor of nitrogen starvation in association with acetyl phosphate levels
Bacterial 'IQ'
BMC Microbiology A comprehensive census of bacterial and archaeal signal transduction sequences reveals that the complexity of signalling systems can generally be correlated with the phylogenetic position and lifestyle of the organism, and that Wolinella succinogenes has the highest 'IQ' as measured by the number of encoded signal transducers.
