(Image courtesy of Paul Kwan, Ph.D.) Highlights of this Course Although a great deal of emphasis of the course is on the structures of the organs and tissues, this is not a course based solely on pure microscopic descriptions. Lectures and laboratory sessions will focus on the integration of structures with functions, drawing from many disciplines (light/electron microscopy, cell biology, biochemistry, physiology etc.). Highlights of the course are its magnificently detailed collections of tissues as represented in the Circulatory Lecture Course Description Histology is the study of microscopic anatomy dealing with the structures of cells, tissue and organs in relation to their functions. The first part of the course deals with basic tissues (a collection of similar cells and the extracellular matrices surrounding them): epithelium; connective tissues, including blood, bone and cartilage; muscles; and nerves. The second part of the course deals with organs, systemic arrangement of tissues performing a specific function, as of respiration, digestion, etc.

64. Welcome To The DIGITAL ATLAS OF HISTOLOGY
Brazilian atlas with high resolution microscopic images, designed for bimedical students and professionals.
http://www2.uerj.br/~micron/atlas/atlasenglish/index.htm
Welcome to the DIGITAL ATLAS OF HISTOLOGY !!!! This ATLAS was elaborated to professionals, scientists, students and for every one who loves Histology. It is being developed by the Laboratory of Microscopy and Image Processing, department of Histology - UERJ, and it is free. The ATLAS is constantly renewed and upgraded , receiving new images and texts. In few months we will release a new image database in Cellular Biology, Embryology and Anatomy, and we will add new tips about books and web pages that present correlated subjects.
In order to inform about changes, upgrades and to receive your suggestion, we would like to invite you to fulfill the formulary, before surf the ATLAS. It will not take more than 2 minutes, and the information posted will be used only for our academic purposes.
Many thanks.
Sincerely, Prof. Luiz Henrique Monteiro Leal

Here, it should be said that this is a potential aid to thought and confidence in what matters - working with the microscope, or its reproduced images: looking, thinking, looking again, relating the detail and its implications to the patient. (If it makes some things clear, it might also help with exams.)

Roy C Ellis: Laboratory Manager, IMVS Division of Pathology, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woodville, South Australia If your interest is laboratory Histology and related topics then you have arrived at a WEB site that, hopefully, will tempt you to stay a while and perhaps re-visit. My aim is to continually add new information. Unfortunately I am restricted to 10MB of space on the present server and have already reached that limit so that each time fresh material is added some of the old material will have to be sacrificed. I have removed the 'Microscopy' and 'Electron Microscopy' sections and replaced them with 'Problems and Did You Know's in Histological technique'. Depending upon space one or more new problems or did you knows will appear each month. To enable me to provide the information YOU require your feedback would be a great help. Meanwhile enjoy.
Your feedback is encouraged and would be appreciated: roy.ellis@imvs.sa.gov.au

The Histology course was developed for students entering the health professions. The course offers an introduction to the light microscopic structure of tissues and organs. Each topic corresponds to scheduled lectures and laboratory sessions. There are 23 lessons in all. When entering each lesson the students is given information about the lesson. Beginning students are encouraged to go through each Lab Intro sequentially. The left side of the screen contains a description of the image displayed on the right. Words in red describe certain structures on the image. Words in blue boxes further describe a particular structure for the advanced learner. Words in dark blue highlight structure-function correlates and selected histopathology which are included in many lessons in order to emphasize normal structure and function. From the text screen the student can view the image displayed in a magnified view. This view also offers a movable scrolling text field so that you can view the enlarged image and compare the text to the image. Intermediate and advanced level students can use a directory to randomly jump to particular text/image combinations

A thin section of lung tissue stained with hematoxylin and eosin . This individual suffers from emphysema Histology is the study of tissue sectioned as a thin slice, using a microscope . It can be described as microscopic anatomy . Histology is an essential tool of biology Histopathology , the microscopic study of diseased tissue, is an important tool of anatomical pathology since accurate diagnosis of tumors and other diseases usually requires histopathological examination of samples. The trained technicians who perform the work of processing, thin sectioning, and staining these tissues are Histologic Technicians (HT) and Histologic Technologists (HTL). Their field of study is called histotechnology. Histological examination of tissues starts with surgery biopsy or autopsy . The tissues are then fixed in a fixative, a process that stabilizes the tissues to prevent decay. The most common fixative is formalin (10% formaldehyde in water). The samples are then immersed in multiple baths of progressively more concentrated ethanol , to dehydrate the tissue, followed by a clearing agent such as chloroform xylene or Histoclear, and finally hot molten
