Next UNDERSTANDING TRI COLOR GENETICS By Cristina Sherer I have been raising Tri color Rex for a few years and have come to understand a great deal about how it works. By using an understanding of basic color genetics, I have learned what colors work well with Tri color. By starting with my book knowledge and actually trying it out on my own breeding stock I have put together my own ideas on how to raise these eye-catching animals. It is best to start with a foundation that shows us what our Tri colors are capable of passing on. This color is one of the most recessive colors. This presents us with a question of what to breed to a Tri color? Bear with me as I illustrate what genes are involved. The AGS is also committed to spreading knowledge to allow owners to give proper care to every gerbil kept as a pet. Although we call ourselves the American Gerbil Society, members throughout the Americas and overseas are also welcome to join! Before continuing please read our Mission Statement and Code of Ethics What is a gerbil? The Mongolian gerbil, Meriones unguiculatus, is a small, domesticated rodent commonly kept as a pet in homes and classrooms across the country. They are small, but larger than mice. Unlike their cousins, mice and rats, they have a fully furred tail, with a tuft at the end. Due to selective breeding, gerbils are now available in a wide array of colors. They are clean, inquisitive, friendly, and make great companions to those that choose to keep them. 176. Promoter - Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia
Wikipedia article in genetics a sequence locted upstream of a gene that enables its translation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Promoter
Promoter
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
For other uses, see Promoter (disambiguation)
In genetics , a promoter is a DNA sequence that enables a gene to be transcribed . The promoter is recognized by RNA polymerase , which then initiates transcription. In RNA synthesis, promoters are a means to demarcate which genes should be used for messenger RNA creation - and, by extension, control which proteins the cell manufactures. The perfect promoter is called a canonical sequence
Contents
  • Promoter elements Promoter sequences
    • Prokaryotic promoters edit
      Promoter elements
      • Core promoter
        • Transcription Start Site (TSS) Approximately -35 A binding site for RNA polymerase
          • RNA-polymerase I: transcribes genes encoding ribosomal RNA RNA-polymerase II: transcribes genes encoding mRNA and certain small nuclear RNAs RNA-polymerase III: transcribes genes encoding tRNAs and other small RNAs
          General transcription factor binding sites
        Proximal promoter
        • Approximately -250 Specific transcription factor binding sites
        Distal promoter
        • Anything further upstream (but not an enhancer or other regulatory region whose influence is positional/orientation independent) Specific transcription factor binding sites
Promoters represent critical elements that can work in concert with other regulatory regions ( enhancers silencers boundary elements /insulators) to direct the level of transcription of a given gene.

177. June 9, 2000, Hour One: Human Genome Project / Genetics Update
Where does the push to sequence the human genome stand, and what's the outlook for the near future? And what will knowing the genome be able to tell us? A genetics update on this hour of Science Friday.
http://www.sciencefriday.com/pages/2000/Jun/hour1_060900.html
THIS WEEK ON
SCIENCE FRIDAY... Science Friday Archives June Hour One: Human Genome Project / Genetics Update As rumors swirled around the genetics community that the Celera corporation was within days of releasing the full results of their human genome sequencing work, Craig Venter, head of Celera, and Francis Collins, head of the National Institutes of Health genome project, said that their two projects really were not racing to the finish at all. At an NIH conference on genetics and cancer this week, the two scientists said that their roles "complemented" each other. Furthermore, the Celera leader said that all the company's genome data would be made freely available, not sold privately to pharmaceutical and biotech companies. This unusually friendly meeting between the two scientists comes during a busy time for genetics research. Earlier his month, Celera announced that it had sequenced 1/3 of the mouse genome. In March, the company published the data for the gene sequence of the fruit fly, a favorite of biologists. In other news, the actual number of genes in the human genome is in debate. Estimates range from about 30,000 to over 100,000but noone really knows. Dueling papers in the journal Nature Genetics, and a debate at a recent conference at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, have increased the speculation. (There's even a sweepstakes running in which scientists bet on the number of genes that code for proteins, winner take all.)

What is Genetics?

for members of the public
The Clinical Genetics Society (CGS) was set up in 1970 to bring together doctors and other professionals involved in the care of individuals and families with genetic disorders, with the following aims: to advance and promote the science and practice of Clinical Genetics to bring together workers who have a common interest in Clinical Genetics to understand, prevent, cure and alleviate conditions with a genetic aetiology to publish and disseminate reports, statements, and research findings Since its creation, the CGS membership has increased steadily to over 400 members from around the world but principally in the UK. The aims have broadened, and now include: promoting and facilitating education, for the genetics community and other health care professionals, those outwith the profession and the wider public encouraging high standards of training for professionals within Clinical Genetics facilitating research into basic human genetics and genetic disorders maintaining excellent links with patient groups continuing constructive dialogue with government and other politicians on genetics-related issues Next Spring Conference: Glasgow, 23-24 March 2006
