    http://www.astro.washington.edu/astrobio/extreme.html
Extreme Environments on Earth: Analogs for Exobiology Faculty: Baross, Delaney, Deming, Frederickson, Gammon, Leigh, Rodrigo, Staley Background Our basic premise is that life on Earth is the best model we have for life elsewhere. Life here is extraordinarily adaptable: organisms thrive in extremes of temperature, pressure, pH, solute concentrations, dryness, ionizing radiation, and other conditions. Study of life in extreme environments on Earth guides the search for extraterrestrial life. We study Earth's "extremophiles", organisms (especially microbes) that live in the most extreme conditions, both to identify the extreme limits of Earth-like life, and to learn to identify the types and activities of those life forms. Starting Assumptions and General Hypotheses
    • Liquid Water Assuming water is required for organisms' activity and growth, limits of microbial life can largely be defined by the boundary conditions for liquid water. Salinity and hydrostatic pressure determine phase changes: different combinations can expand the "liquid" boundaries substantially, especially at high temperatures.

    The Joshua Lederberg Papers
Launching a New Science: Exobiology and the Exploration of Space
Documents Visuals Joshua Lederberg spent the fall of 1957 as Fulbright Visiting Professor of Bacteriology in the laboratory of virologist Sir Frank MacFarlane Burnet at the University of Melbourne, taking part in the research on antibody production that would earn Burnet a share of the Nobel Prize in 1960. From his vantage point in Australia, Lederberg witnessed the ascent of Sputnik on October 4, 1957, the first man-made satellite in earth orbit. The launch of Sputnik by the Soviet Union intensified the Cold War, but it also heralded the age of space flight and exploration, with its promise of revealing new secrets about the nature of the universe and the origins of life. Sputnik filled Lederberg with both excitement and apprehension: excitement about the potential of unmanned spacecraft as research tools; apprehension about man's likely impact on other planets. Upon his return to the University of Wisconsin in December 1957, he immersed himself in the literature on astronomy and rocketry in order to address his main concern: that other planets which might harbor life could be contaminated by microorganisms carried from earth via spacecraft, and that, conversely, earth could fall victim to an unknown pathogen brought back from another planet, a pathogen to which earth's inhabitants had no immunity (a scenario depicted in Michael Crichton's 1969 science fiction novel

    Exobiology Branch (SSX) Overview

Exobiology studies includes the history, distribution, and chemistry of biogenic elements in the solar system; prebiotic chemical evolution and the origin of life; and the history of EarthÄs early biosphere as recorded in microorganisms and ancient rocks. The research is conducted both on Earth and in space. The Branch also serves as the center of expertise within the agency for issues of planetary protection. As the agency lead center in exobiology, Branch exobiologists exercise a leadership role in NASAÄs Exobiology Program through program planning, performance reviews, advisory services to related NASA programs, and external relations.

... Exobiology Exobiology Bioastronomy, astrobiology, exobiology… Whatever you call it, it’s all the same—the study of the origins of life and in particular its evolution, its distribution across Earth and the universe, and the structures and processes involved.
Scientific advances have enabled us to detect life in the most unexpected places. The existence of living organisms in some of Earth’s most extreme environments has led to serious consideration of their existence elsewhere in the universe.
Since Earth is as yet the only planet where life is known to have developed in all its diversity, scientists use it as a starting point in their search throughout the solar system for signs of organic activity—the carbon-based elements capable of generating new life systems.
    Jargon Organic
In biology, the term organic applies to anything involving organs, living tissues and—by extension—organized life forms.
Organic chemistry, as opposed to mineral chemistry, deals with the study of compounds and in particular carbon compounds. What’s the connection? The basic building blocks of life, such as proteins and nucleic acids, consist of chains of elements based on carbon compounds.

Subsurface Lithotrophic Microbial Ecosystems and Exobiology.
Microorganisms living deep underground on Earth might help us understand prospects for extraterrestrial life.
These warm wet subsurface oases might provide environments for extraterrestrial ecosystems. However, water and heat alone are not enough to support life. Potential extraterrestrial microorganisms would still need sources of carbon and energy. This is one reason why exobiologists are studying microbial ecosystems in extreme environments on Earth. They are searching for a model of how living organisms could obtain carbon and energy on other planets, yet resist the killing conditions found there. An example of such a model ecosystem may exist within deep subsurface aquifers of the Columbia River Basalt group in western North America. Recent investigations suggest that microorganisms in these deep groundwaters that run through volcanic rocks may form an ecosystem that persists without any dependence on the surface biosphere.
Sources of energy and carbon for life.
